Just Got in the mail the insert that goes in the rear lights of my desert fox trailer.

Has a socket to go where the light went and this goes just inside the lense. There is a switch on the panel that makes the light change from a slow normal blink to a quick double blink. also a switch for a double blink on the brake.

Looks good and works really well

Eric:

You did good!

I've been admiring the LED lamps that big trucks and, increasingly, many other vehicles are now using, for several months. I've been dreaming of finding an LED lamp that I could retrofit into my existing Bargman 84 lamps. And here to my surprise and pleasure is the solution, already manufactured and offered for sale.

Thanks for telling your fellow TDR members about them. I'm going to order a set of four. They sure aren't cheap but the improvement in visibility and safety is worth the cost.

They take a bit to get them ordered. I think they were just in the process of making them. They might have enough now but it took about a month or so to get them.....

What is the advantage of the LED taillights? I'd like some LED interior lights to keep power demands down when camping w/o hookups, but I guess I don't see the advantage of LED taillights. It is the "Cool Factor"?

klenger:

LEDs are much brighter and more noticeable to a following driver. The next time you are following a big rig in traffic observe his tail/stop/turn lights. I think LEDs draw less current while producing much brighter light.

LEDs are difficult to adapt to existing lamps as I understand because they are directional. If the socket in an old-fashioned recessed lamp points in a direction perpendicular to the spot where light is required, for use as a reading lamp for example, an LED will not be effective.

Depending on the type of light most are a complete fixture replacement.

Other 2 advantages to LED

1. mutiple bulbs in one fixture so redundancy against burned out bulbs.

2. faster lighting than normal incandescent

I found another site that has some specialty LED Lights. There are socket ones that has 6 LED's facing to the rear to make more of a reflection.

There are 90 deg. Lights for that socket that faces the wrong way.

On the site, scroll down a bit and click on the 3157 LED Light.

I am considering the 3156 for the backup lights and a 3157 both have the 6 led facing into the reflector and 19 facing straight rear.

You need to get 2,... 6 ohm resistors to correct the electronic flasher.

LED Lights use 1/10th the power of Conv. Lights and they last 10's of thousand's of hours.

They last around 100,000 hours and are unaffected by vibration.

I'm going to have a total of 676 led's on my trailer. I just got them in the mail today. I will have 52 amber side markers with 6 led's in each. 20 red markers with 6 in each, and four tail lights with 61 in each. The trailer is 30 feet long enclosed and painted to match the truck. I will post pic when done.

I just finished getting my 04 LED tails all working, You need four 6 ohm x 50 w resistors,,,, one on each bulb. I also had to re-wire the bulbs because Dodge in there infinite wisdom figured out a way to use a universal bulb..... one way.

676 LED"s !!!! Geeez Loueeeze!!! Thas a pic I will have to see.....

OK, just re-read your post... . the # of LED'd total in all the lamps... . but still, alot of light..... I'm going to replace my TT marker lights with a replacement style that has 14 LED's in each and 6 of them are pointed at a 45 deg angle. 3 to the front and 3 to the rear... . Have to try to find the website for it,... . Think it is down on the favorites on my other computer... .

Another benefit to LEDs are that the circuit boards are (usually) covered with epoxy so they are impervious to water/salt water.

LED's are very nice. The only downside to me,besides the flasher issues, is for my use, i plow snow, the LED's dont give off enough heat to keep the lenses clear in most snow storms. Typical bulbs have enough heat to leep minor accumultaions ,and snow from the roads melting as fast as it acculumlates.
