This is going to BLOW some minds... ... .
I was SHOCKED.....

I've had my stock lift pump now for 55,000 miles and everything seemed fine...

If you read my post about a new lift pump part number. . you'll understand why I was thinking my pump had gone to it's grave.

The new pump had gauge readings FAR ABOVE the old pump...
But I thought... the only thing this will do is keep the VP44 cool.

WRONG!!!!!!!

No kidding... . This feels like a differant truck...

From a dead standstill... Punch it. . and as soon as boost comes up. . the tires go up in smoke!!!!!

NO B. S. !!!!!

MY GOD since NEW this truck NEVER BEHAVED LIKE THIS!!!!!!!

My mileage has got to have gone WAY DOWN!

There is NO WAY this thing could be producing this much torque and H. P. with out sucking down the fuel!!!

I've always thought the truck was powerful...
but the Seat of the pants meter is off the charts now!!!

Idle also went up almost 100 RPM
Idle is more quiet and smoother than ever!!!

So..... when does the "Other Shoe Drop" and I find out that all this time the VP44 has been SUFFERING... Killing itself... .

When will all those miles of 0-2 PSI at WOT come back in the form of a blown injection pump???

Happy for now!!!!'

Larry, that's amazing. I've been thinking recently about just replacing mine even though it's not broke (but maybe it is and I just don't know it #ad
) Do you have pressure readings from the new pump yet?

Thanks.

You're giving me hope Larry... I'm running with just over 1 psig out of my lift pump and the new one is going in tomorrow. I got the same part number you did. It makes me sick because I have no idea how long I've been running this way (just got my gauge installed). I hope I get the same results you did. I'm very curious about this part number change... maybe they've fixed something? Let's hope so.

I'll let you know if I get the results Larry did (fingers crossed). I'm holding the pump in my hand right now and I'm tempted to say screw sleep and go put it in... lol. By the way, the part number is # 3938435.

I've been thinking I need to check the pressures on mine (stock lift pump) only smokes em through through 2nd gear now.

(I wish) Anyway, sometimes it seems Im driving a slug and others a guided missle. Could a lift pump cause this?

Might just change it anyway. Is the pump your talking about still stock? (DC)

Pressure numbers are as follows:

Old pump.

Idle 8PSI
WOT 2-0 PSI.
(pressure dropped immediately to 2 PSI on hard application of "GO" pedal then proceed to the bottom of the gage 0-. 5 PSI)

New Pump

Idle 15 PSI
WOT 10 PSI

ROCK STEADY AT WOT.....

The part number was indeed # 3938435
and it's still a Carter.

parts man at Cummins told me that the new part Superceeded the old numbers.

What years does the new pump # cover. I have a y2k and was wondering if it would help me also. Do the pumps have the # stamped on them so I can tell what pump I have? Thanks for the help.

Does DC pay for these pumps if you show the poor PSI readings?

I check mine everytime I change the fuel filter, when the pressure started getting low enough, I made an appointment with the dealer, first we discussed that in 98, the lift pump was covered under the HD diesel emissions warrantee (80K miles).

Then they said, "we will test it, if we find its bad, we will order you a new one, if we find its OK, we will charge you 1/2 hour test fee ($25. 00).

No problem, they tested it, ordered a new one, then I went back and got it changed under warrantee.

By watching mine, I knew to take it in when i started seeing 1-3 PSI at WOT. The new pump does not feel any different then the old one, because it was not going to 0 psi.

I have a 2001. 5 ETH. I only read about . 5-1 psi at WOT. I thought the new ETH was supposed to have a new style lift pump!? Maybe I was mistaken. Will the new pump described above fit mine?

What silencer ring? ;)

Forget warranty -- BOMBS AWAY! :D:D

The lift pump is SUPPOSED to be covered under the warranty... .
However... for the $140. 00 cost from a Cummins shop and the 1/2 hour of my labor to put it in... .

I didn't even feel like making an issue about the replacement of the pump with the local Dodge dealer.

EVERY TIME I go there I get an Attitude.....

Last time I went there for a reflash for the TC erratic lockup... (TSB 18-02-99)
All they wanted to do was keep the truck for a few DAYS to diagnose the problem...

I had to ORDER them to do the TSB!!!!
Then had to PAY FOR IT OUT OF MY OWN POCKET BECAUSE THEY DIDN"T KNOW IF IT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM!!!.

I've found that if I go in there and speak like I may know a little about the truck... they just want to argue with me!!!

I need to find another Dodge shop!

Larry

Where do you check the pressure at? Is there a fitting for this?

Found that out the hard way. The dealer even had me put in after market injectors and then voided my warranty to get rid of me (I fought with them for almost two years). I changed the lift pump myself and MAN what a difference in performance. The Jackasses told me they had done all kinds of different thing to my truck in the two years I fought with them. When I asked for my warranty reveiw half the stuff they said they had done was not even listed. Not happy to lose the warranty but happy I no longer have to deal with the dealership. As little as possible of my money will ever go Chrysler again.
Before new lift pump:
Idle: 9 psi
WOT: 0-2

After new lift pump:
Idle: 15 psi
WOT: 12psi
WOT towing: 11-12 psi
towing at speed: 14-15 psi

Like I said this thing can tow now I just wish it would have done this when new.
April 29th towed against 35MPH winds and could climb to 65MPH (faster if I wanted to but the speed limit thing) while climbing hills. This truck moves but still sucks fuel. I was towing everything in my signature.

To take gauge readings you can test before (preferred) and after the filter...

A comparison of these readings will also tell you how clogged your filter is.

On my 1998. 5 and 1999 filter heads there are two 1/8 NPT test ports.
the one furthest away from the engine block (to the right when viewed fron the front of the truck. ). is the pre filter port.
the one closest to the engine is Post filter...

just go to ACE Hardware and buy a 1/8 NPT Male to 5/16 (or 3/8) hose barb fitting.
I bought a VDO 0-30 PSI fuel pressure gage for $18. 00 at the local speed shop.

Also if you buy that VDO gauge you will need a 1/8NPT Female to 5/16 (or 3/8) hose barb fitting as well...

Get at least 8 feet of Fuel hose as well... .

Total cost for me was @25. 00 for the setup.

with 8 feet of hose you can fish the hose into the cab... . through the window... . and watch the readings as you drive!

This truck ROCKS!!!!!!!

I still can't believe all this POWER!!!!

Where can I obtain this Carter lift pump? At idle with the stock pump (post filter) I get about 10 psi and when I get into it, less than 2. It does cruise at about 65mph with 10 psi.

STAY THE HELL OUT OF THE MUD YOU SLOB!!!!... . #ad

HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE

The beauty of this pump is that it's still a CUMMINS OEM!!!!!!!

Just go to your local Cummins shop. . give them your engine serial number.
The number is found on the engine tag on the front driver's side of the block.

This new part number "Should" come up as # 3938435
If it doesn't... . ask questions... .
I don't know what years it covers... but my GUT says it should cover all the ISB's.

Larry

P. S...

NO BS ABOUT THIS LIFT PUMP DEAL!!!!!!
It's the real deal!!!!!

Larry, have you done any fuel system mods such as drilling out your banjo bolts?

I am wondering how the Cummins pn 3938435 Carter compares to the HP Carter pump (CRT-P4601HP)? The HP Carter is spec'd at 15psi & 100gph. It looks just like the OEM pump except for different wire hookup, which would be a simple solder job, and is $79 from Summit Racing.
