If you notice my other thread, my LP had been leaking fuel, so I made an appointment and went to the dealer today...

Tech looked at it, and sure enough, it was leaking (I guess I'm retarded and didn't know what I was talking about  ) so he told the service manager I needed a new one... check for one in stock and sure enough, they have FIVE of them!! I thought they couldn't stock ANY, let alone FIVE! The one thing the tech did do that made me feel good was say from memory the Part #, which told me he's replaced lots of them...

I asked him where it was leaking from and his reply was "The electrical connection on the bottom. " Now, I've had my other transfer pump apart before, and I couldn't see how it would be possible for fuel to get out of the impellar part and down through the wires, but he said it was (he had also told me 1 year ago that my steering box had "jumped a gear" which I now know is physically IMPOSSIBLE!!!) Anyway...

My old LP had been showing good numbers... 14 at idle, 10-11 at cruise, but down to 0-1 PSI at WOT (Drag Comp and 3's will do that). New LP shows 14. 5-15 at idle, 12 at cruise, and 4 at WOT... also doesn't suck down nearly as fast as the old one did, so I guess the old one was getting weak? 20k miles and 1 year old last week (had it replaced this same time last year by same dealer). Maybe my mileage will go up now too... has been sucking lately around 13-14. 5 MPG. Pickup also is idling a LOT smoother now, doesn't have the rough "missing" type idle to it... any connection there you think?

Oh, no mention of my Comp or turbo, or exhaust, or injectors, or gauges, or anything... just a "Yep, you need a new pump, and we'll put one on in about an hour!" Works for me! LOL... same dealer that took my roommate for $160 yesterday for air/fuel filter changes! :)

Ditto on what Hammersley said,

I looked at his and installed one on mine. Best investment and piece of mind you can ever do for your truck. :D

Good morning TDR- I am I guess, one of the new kids on the block. Been hanging around here since I came over from "The Darkside" (F*rd). Anyway, on the lift pump issue, it seems to me that a pump (any pump) would rather "push fuel" and not "pull it".

Can't we simply by-pass the existing pump with a good in-line pump mounted closer to the fuel tank?

Yep, :D Thats why a few of have become FASS devotees :D There is nothing more comforting than knowing the fuel system is now bulletproof. :D :D ;)

Here's my contention for the FASS currently:

FASS = $560 or so, right?

New LP at dealer = $0. 00

New EDM's that will be delivered tomorrow = $$$$

hahhahahaha... so, rather then fixing a problem that I am having (low FP), I went and bought bigger injectors! :) hehehehe

Am trying to decide if the FASS is worth the money, and will let you guys test it to the brink of breakage before I buy (plus, I'm flat broke now, and can't buy anything else for a while ;) )

Have also been considering the Wildcat system of just upgrading the lines. Still leaves the crappy stock LP though.

BTW, I HATE RAIN!!! The two times I've had the chance to go to a track and it starts raining!!! ARRGGGHHHH Maybe it's not as bad in Phoenix and by tonight will be clear enough to run, but right now I'm really bummed... new LP and the truck is running AWESOME and w/ the rain I won't get to run her.

I'll be the first in line to say the FASS is a great looking product with lots of potential to be a solution to 24V lift pump woes. But I dont think anyone can proclaim its bulletproof and will last for half a million miles... at least not until that kind of data shows up. The PE pumps were supposed to be bulletproof too.

Dont get me wrong... I think the FASS is pretty stout looking machine. But only time will tell. With some stock Carters going over 100K, its gonna take a little while.

(Nomex hood and suit on) :)

Would it not be just as effective as the FASS and less expensive to simply install another say, 7# carter pump in-line closer to the tank and let that pump supply the fuel under pressure to the current LP, filter/water separator set-up?

The new carter could be mounted inside the frame rail protected and out of the way?

Just a thought...

Thanks!

Bill... that is a tried and proven method for many here on the TDR. Probably many not on the TDR too. Not everyone likes it while others really like it.

The FASS is different in its filtering. For many having a single "install and forget" pump is worth everything. I agree.

I decided to go with Wildcat Diesel's big line fuel system, and have been more than pleasantly suprised. I can't pull my FP down below 8/9 psi with comp on 5/5. Cruise is steady 14-15, and my 15psi guage measured at the inlet to the VP is pegged at ~16 some of the time. Level 3/3 WOT is 11-12 psi.

I've got 30K on my 3990105 lift pump (installed it at 50K when the OEM pump (not 3990105) starting showing weaker numbers) and if it starts failing... . I'll know it, and spend $150 for another one. The 3990105 has been out since ~5-01 with no further revisions. I know it's still not bullet-proof, but I feel it's a pretty decent version, at least so far for me.

This was a big reason that I went with the FASS system. I got over 100,000 miles out of my factory lift pump, so I'm not complaining about it. It is till good and works.

But now that I am out of warranty, and I am the one responsible for the longevity and reliability of my daily driver, I elected to upgrade to a system that is basically a plug and play.

Based on the size (over filtered to the max) and the construction, the system should last me until I either drive the truck into the ground or am no longer able to drive.

I do know that when I installed this system, that there was a distinct reduction in engine vibration and valve clack noise.

I did not want to piece something together and this FASS system came with everything I needed to upgrade the truck.

The only modification I made to the FASS system was to drill out the VP fuel fitting in the kit to get rid of the restriction. Other than that it is a perfect pump for my application. I'm currently getting 22. 78 mpg and my truck is a 4x4.

Pricey, yes I suppose so, but my habit is to invest only one time in a product that will last. I hate buying things more than once. Thats why I bought the Dodge, not because it was a Dodge, but because it had the Cummings Engine.

So after reading the many threads over the last couple of years that have been devoted to lift pumps and upgrades for the lift pump system, the FASS system has my vote as being the most robust of everything that I have researched so far.

That, in a nutshell is why I went with the FASS system. :D

Not trying to start a riot or anything, but

DITTO. My LP is 40k old and been on the MAXFLOW for less than 10K.

You can buy a Max Flow kit and TWO spare lift pumps for the price of a FASS. I agree, it looks GREAT, and when I exceed the delivery capabilities of my stock system with upgraded lines, I'll look into it. Getting rid of the banjos is UNDERrated.

With DD3's and DDUFM -no defuel upgrade- I can't get under 7psi--and I need a fuel filter.

FWIW

this may sound strange, but I swear I have higher fuel pressure after the EDM install.

strange but maybe true, less I had air in the lines or something

I surrender:D I admit, it looks/sounds like one he**of a good upgrade.

As I said earlier, just came over from the 'Darkside" I can not beleive the difference in power (even out of the box) in the CTD vs PSD. Can't wait to hook it up to the 5er:-laf

Thanks for the info/clearification...

I'll say that the FASS is worth the money, after 3 lift pumps in one year from Cummins what a waste of money thrown in to the toilet, Of course I put a little over 50,000 miles on my truck this year but a pump should last much longer that 15-20,000 miles before preasures fall of to 8-10 psi at an idle post filter. (with a new filter)

The FASS as told to me should last 500,000 miles or more.
