hi all, first off, im a new member but have followed the board for sometime now and i could really use some help.
last week my truck wouldnt start and had to have it towed to dodge. they replaced the lift pump under the cummins engine warranty(i guess they didnt see my blue box) and ever since the truck takes a few seconds of cranking before it starts. it has always started before as soon as i bump the starter. when the check engine came on, i took it back and the tech said it was a 'incorrect pump timing' fault code' so he cleared the code and now the light is on again. the truck goes back to dodge in a few days #ad
but if anyone can help, i sure would appreciate it. thanks... chris

Jetracer, got bad news, but your injection pump is toast (the expensive one, but is covered under 100k warranty). The hard starting will likely get much worse to where it won't start at all, but once it starts it will probably run fine until the next time you shut it off. Your injection pump has TU'd because your lift pump TU'd, the very thing many have tried to prevent by upgrading fuel lines and lift pumps.

Good luck at getting fixed, and welcome to TDR #ad

jet , first thing they are going to look for is a nick in the pump wire where you had the bluebox , if they find it expect to pay for the repair , maybe you can slide it by , you'll be amazed at what you can get away with ... #ad
...

if they tell you no repair because of nick in the wire , say fine and GET IT OUT OF THE DEALERSHIP , they will gouge you between 4 to 5k just for the pump , it can be bought elesewhere for alot less , about 1300 - 1500 , there are many sources available .

takes a few hours to replace and isn't really that hard , got a service manual ? if not , get one , best 90 bucks you'll spend on the truck .

good luck

yeah vaughn, that is bad news. i will see if dodge will cover it under warranty, if not then i will take it to cummins. they (cummins) quoted me $1240 for a new vp44 and 3-4 hours labor at $108 per hour to do the swap. does anyone know if there is any to way to test the vp44 to find out if it is bad or do i drive it till it dies? since i got the truck back, i havent turned the blue box on. maybe i should set it at 50% and put the wood to it.

Blue Chip (the makers of the Blue Box) sells a item for $40 bucks that is a pump tester. I agree with Vaughn... the code for 'pump timing' means the pump is toast. I'd remove the blue box and dab some black paint,or that liquid plastic where the box wire was attached

$108 per hour shop rate!!!?? Man I should've been a diesel tech!
I haven't priced diesel shop rates yet, (knock on wood) there's been no need to.

My truck had the same problem. Its at Cummins Southern Plains right now awaiting a diagnostic test. I have a feeling that the inj. pump is bad too. I've replaced everything else.

well, a few days have gone by and dodge is still trying to figure out the problem. i should know whats up in a few days.
jeff, good luck with your truck. i am ready to take my truck to cummins if dodge cant figure it out.

just for your info on the on the labor rate for disel tech. the shop might charge big but the mechanic does not do that well. a level 6 master tech ( wich is the highest you can go) gets about 23. 85 per hour.

good news, dodge has finally decided the injector pump is bad and replaced it under warranty. the truck starts on the first crank and idles much smoother. the dodge tech #ad
already saw the blue box when it was towed in with a bad lift pump and said some b. s. about not covering it under warranty. the service manager could care less, so i walked out feelin good.
next week i will be home (working out of town) and cant wait to install my JRE 4 inch exhaust, and then, the real bombing begins, DD 3's, DTT vb and converter and more.
thanks to all who helped out... chris

I have seen same problem on a truck and they change out 3 vp44 and 2 ecm before they found out that the lift pump was not putting out enough fuel psi.
With 3rd vp, and 2ne ecm and new lift pump all is well.

Sorry to hear about your pump problems. Who was the dealer? If the service writer was open to bombed trucks.

tgbol, the dealer was barber dodge in vallejo. they had better service than the two i normally go to in so cal. as far as the service manager, i dont think he knew too much about dc denying warranty service on modified cummins trucks (looking for nicks in wires, boost elbow, etc... ) im just happy its fixed.
