After experiencing a dead pedal response a few times, I researched the TDR website and magazine and purchased a new Westach fuel pressure gauge and installed it in my '02. The pressure readings were maybe 1 to 2 psi, sometimes. I checked the service manual and it informed me that the pressure should be 10 psi, minimum. I cycled the key and got the P0216 code for the Injector Pump (IP).

I was going to fix it myself, (I ordered a pump relocation kit along with the FP gauge) but I only have 45,000 miles and am still under warrantee, so I didn't want to mess that up. So, I dropped it off at the dealership and told them what I thought was wrong - failed Lift Pump (LP) and failing IP. It took them a week to replace the LP with the new In Tank Pump (ITP) and reset the trouble codes. The dealer would not replace the IP at this time.

I was expecting steady 10 psi minimum reading with the new ITP. Instead, when I start it, I wait about a minute to get any reading at all. Then the gauge kind of steps it's way up slowly to about 7-8 psi. That's as high as it ever gets and it's pretty erratic, dipping down low and back up again. This behavior seems to have nothing to do with acceleration/deceleration. This situation is not what I expected.

So after driving it for a couple of weeks, I experienced another dead pedal, cycled the key and got the IP code again. I took it back to the dealership and told them that it still wasn't right. It took them another week to install the IP.

I just picked it up this morning, and am getting no reading whatsoever on the FP gauge. They probably didn't bother to bleed the line. Of course, the diesel mechanic is not on duty today, so they can't possibly help me.

Does anyone know the flow and pressure specs for this new ITP? My FP readings to this point have not been very encouraging. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that I ought to get a nice, steady reading at somewhere above 10 psi to meet specifications. I don't understand how Dodge can install this pump and say that it's a fix if it doesn't meet their own specs.

Should I trust this new ITP to be able to adequately feed my brand new IP or should I install an aftermarket system?

D/C doesnt go by fuel pressure anymore. they do a flow test. if it flows so much fuel in a certain time it is said to be ok. there is a service bulltin on it .

I just had my LP and VP replaced from the dealer about a month ago under warranty. I have the new ITP and I am only seeing about 9 psi at start up, 6 going down the road at 65mph and when i get on the throttle it will drop to 3psi. When I finally get to over 100k on the odometer I will add a second pusher pump or remove the ITP and do it the way it shpuld be with a pusher on the frame rail.

I had the ITP in my truck since Jan. My pressure is common with others. I got the 0216 code on Fri coming home from work. I bought a tank module off of E-bay and got it on Fri. I'm going to go with the kit from Glacier diesel power when I'm ready. I'm going to talk to my dealer to see if I can put the fuel system on it before they change the IP. I don't want to drive it like it is with the ITP and new IP. Jeff

Upgrade your fuel line from the tank to the VP to a 3/8 I. D. minimum or 1/2 I. D. if you are going to make big power. The 3/8th I. D. will allow you to flow more volum of fuel so the VP is not starved and the LP should not cavitate. You should be able to maintain 12psi with no problem. I have mine system set to 15 psi which is 1 psi more than the 14 psi overflow pressure on the VP. I have never had any problems with hard starts or dead pedals with the 3/8ths I. D. and I run all my fuel though a very large transmission cooler just before the VP. ;)

Almost forgot, I have over 171,700 on my factory original VP with the mods you see in my sig. ;)

Interesting article. It seems like the ITP leaves a lot to be desired. It's nice to see that Richard Martin at Glacier is taking the time to check out what we are dealing with and giving us an unbiased factual description of the pump. Jeff Knigt on post #5 noted that he was purchasing the pump kit from Glacier and I think I may do the same. It looks like I'll have to remove the ITP and replace it with what was in there originally before I can add a new lift pump. I really don't want to screw up my new IP - I'll bet it'll go a half-million miles if it is properly fed with fuel at the manufacturer's recommended pressure.

I have a GDP kit coming my way, Should be here on Friday Oo. Good bye, Mr. Carter!! My Buddy has the ITP in his '02 and no pressure gauge  Moose00

why the glacier and not the FASS pump? is it better? I needa new lift pump also and was trying to decide between these two. I am just woried about the walbro pump I have never had luck in the past with them.

Marc

I liked the fact that I'm dealing with a small company and directly with the owner at Glacier. It is apparent that he has taken the time to investigate this Dodge Ram lift pump situation. I've never used any Walbro pumps. What kind of problems have you had?
