Strange Problem with the engine

Finally got the new lift pump picked up and installed last night. The full set of Ray T's banjos went in at the same time. I discovered I'm not that good at working blind, so I went ahead and removed the fuel filter canister to give me a little more room.

Much nicer to see the higher readings on the fuel pressure gauge (all measured at the inlet to the VP44):

Idle - 15+ psi

3000 rpm (no load) - 13 psi

Cruising (55 mph) - 13-13. 5 psi

Going to redline in 3rd - no lower than 9 psi

Now a couple of questions for the next time:

1) Anyone else had trouble with the 1/2" mounting nuts being on so tight that the studs back out of the pump? All three of mine were that way. Once I discovered the 7/16" nut under the plate, it made getting the studs out of the bracket easier. Just curious if anyone knew a way to keep this from happening.

2) Repriming the fuel system. Is there anything that should be done to make the pump pick up fuel faster after the install?? I cycled the pump by bumping the starter 7-8 times and it never picked up any fuel. Finally I pulled the fuel filter cap and filter and bumped it again, then it picked up right away. I had my line to my sender open so I figured it would push all the air out of the system that way as it primed. I guess I was wrong. Do you typically have to remove the cap to get it primed?

Thanks as always (saved me having to leave the truck at the dealer for a couple of days)

justin , the factory puts red loctite on the studs , thats why that happened , no way of avoiding it , if you didn't put any on the bolts you should be ok . i pull the filter also , much easier .

pressures look right on target .

as far as priming , the problem was air trapped in the system , i usually hold the bleeder on the schrader at the VP open , but i removed it , so now ???? i guess that popping open the filter canister will do well at displacing the air pre filter .

what happened is pretty typical . you could also open the fuel drain and put a container under it and wait till fuel comes out in a steady stream .

Thanks MM

I figured since I had the hose to my fuel pressure sender opened up, it would allow all the air to escape. Oh well, guess it wanted me to work just a little harder on it.
