New LIFT PUMP !!!!!

Did anyone get their "NEW" lift pump yet????? I spoke to mechanic at the dealer the other day and he did one of the NEW lift pump upgrades. It is a Kit that replaces the engine mounted lift pump with an "IN THE TANK" model like the 2005's... . The factory pump HAS been superceeded and this IS the set up you get when you go in for a lift pump problem. Should be NO MORE lift pump problems... ... Oo. The "OLD" Style pumps are being or have been all removed from stock and the new is the kit... .

Believe me, the "in-tank" pumps WILL fail just like they currently do in all other installations - only difference is, you get to empty the tank of fuel, drop it, and THEN do the replacement, instead of just raising the hood to change the current one - or else remove the bed - always a fun chore if you have other stuff installed in the bed like tool boxes, trailer hitches, etc...

Yeah... . ask my wife how she likes the in-tank fuel pump on her 2000 Durango when it decided to go Tango Uniform in the middle of a busy Houston intersection. Glad she had the extended warranty - with towing!

Just got the new conversion kit in here at work. The boss put it on a stocl order and it took 2 weeks to get here! It has the in-tank pump, a wiring harness, a hose, and a block off plate for the side of hte fuel filter housing. A reflash of the ECM is also supoosed to be done. I'll get pics up tomorrow.

that seems to be what is going to happen... with the pump intank, it should last much longer than being engine mounted, as every pump pushes better than it pulls. . and with it in the fuel, it should stay a little cooler operating than being engine mounted

I think I will be taking a trip to the dealer. Lately my truck has been looping a little at idle. Change fuel filter and air filter, and it still is doing it. So I want to get it to the dealer to have checked out. While I am there, I am going to question them about the new lift pump. Thanks for the info.

For non bomber's Its probably a good idea but will make things worse IMO if you add power and need more fuel flow. With the external pumps you can take em off and install what ever you need, it will be more work to delete the intank pump and rework the fuel pick up assembly.

When I did the tank vent mod I took a pic of the so-called "lift pump". This is kind of scarry. The thing is about 1-1/2" in dia. and about 3" long. I wonder if an external electric fuel pump would pull fuel through this pump if it failed and you had to get home. Of all the vehicles I've had that had " in the tank" fuel pumps, I've only had one fail.

Question for JVolkman



My truck has what I call a hicup while idling. It will idle fine for a while then just about die then come back to life. Is this anything like the looping you describe of your truck? The dealer says no codes and they cannot repeat problem. They had it for an entire day. I pick it up that evening and it does it shortly after I start it. People ask me what is wrong with my truck. Just curious.

Late model Camaros had a pretty serious rash of in-tank pump failures, most often caused by overheating when fuel in the tank got low. Seems in that case at least, the pumps needed not only cooling fuel flow THRU them, but also relied upon fuel circulation around the outside as well. With these setups, at the very least, I'd want to always maintain fuel levels at a quarter tank or more, just to stay on the safe side.

The idle does not drop like it is going to stall. You don't see it in the RPM's, you just hear it. Sometimes its fine, other times its not. Doen'st sound as sevre as yours. Mine just has that looping idle that drives me crazy.

Have the dealer monitor the high pressure fuel rail pressure sensor when this happens. A friend with a 2003 HO had this problem - it was finally cured by replacing the high pressure fuel pump (of which the defective sensor was a non-serviceable component. )
