new lift pump

Hey all,I installed the new lift pump tonight and all is well in Cummins land . One question tho. What is max. p. s. i. ?I'm looking at 13-14 at idle and it doesn't drop below 10 at w. o. t. I flogged it pretty good on my redneck dyno. which is a 8-10% grade. Seems like I got some of my lost power back but I still want more . Doug

Thanks Scott. I've got another sending unit. I'm thinking about putting one pre. and one post with a switch at the gage. I've never seen #s this high 'cause I just installed my f. p. gage. Now if I can just get $500 saved for my new injectors. Doug

Doug, that's a good idea for the other sender. I ended up just purchasing a mechanical gauge for my second FP (pre-filter reading). It's kinda nice having both readings, lets you know when the filter is ready for replacement.



Of course, once you get those new injectors, you may have to take care of those banjo bolts, to keep up with the flow. It really is never ending, but fun none the less. Just wished I had a money tree as my well is dried up

doug , if your engiine is bone stock that WOT reading is good , add some gbig injectors and a fueling box and it will drop like a rock . the factory designed in the restrictions for a reason , they just put the lift pump in the wrong place .

Are the lift pumps covered under the engine waranty? Has anyone tried getting reimbursed if they replaced it themselves.

John,I've heard some folks talking about putting another pump back by the tank. I might go down to Icemans when he does his and do the same. The only question I have is will I have to remove the factory pump or will these pumps work together? As far as warranty goes I called the dealer and the S. M. was going to check and call me back but never did . Oh well I didn't want any crap over my mods any way. The new pump was only $130. Not too bad since I just got a c. p. s. for a p. o. s. d. at work-$177 ,for a sensor!Also cheaper than a new vp44. Doug

P. S. John was nice to meet y'all at glen burnie. Don't know if I can make it up there on 12-15 or not. It would be nice to run my ride on a real dyno not just my redneck one

yes the pump is covered under a warranty , 80k miles i think .



anywho , doug , yes there are guys adding a pusher pump , 7psi unit back as close to the tank as possible . to me if you're going to hack the line open just move the stock pump or a carter 15psi pump , or a mallory 140 marine pump back there and have 1 pump , 2 is overkill and is raising the pressure too high .



but thats my opinion , i have just one pump in the stock location making over 400 hp at the ground . according to the some my truck shouldn't even be running nevermind making that kind of power ...



too bad you can't make it , i'm curious how far the numbers will be down running on winter blended fuel ?

I just put a new pump on. Went from 11 psi at idle to 14 psi and 5psi (wot with everything on) to 8psi. Gained 3 psi throughout the entire range, made me smile. Before that, by adding the aeroquip lines I got from Brandon I went from 3psi WOT to the 5 I had before the new pump. The reason for replacement... it was starting to act erratic and I figured it'd make a good spare.

Hey doug good to see you got your pump in. Guess what?? When I was leaving the cummins power store I jumped on it. Truck seemed week for the new mods. Looked down at my guage, I was pulling vacuum. It will not go over 11 PSI at idle. Down to six on the highway. And every now and then I catch it doing some kind of dance between zero and six. New pump finally showed up at the house today. Ken

Glad to see you have your new pump and all is well. I liked the pictures but my truck was right in front of yours and it was pretty dark and couldn't see the truck too well.

Are you saying that only the bombed trucks are having lift pump problems. I have kept mine stock thus far and don't have any plans for the near future. I don't want to cause myself trouble when I am completely happy with my truck as it is. Clessie gave me all the power I need.

Don't know about the new trucks, but on my 1999 the lift pump went out at 41,000 miles. Replaced it with the new one from Cummins.

cobra , no i'm not saying that only bombed trucks have a problem , all will have the problem at some point , and in my opinion even the new revised pump is going to fail , its to far from the fuel source .



on a quadcab longbed truck its close to 10 ft. most will last past the 3/36 , some past the 80k mark , but mopar is banking on everything on the truck making it past the 3/36 and 75% of the guys not buying an extended warranty so they make their money on out of warranty repairs and sneaky dealers that look for any reason to deny warranty like running with your tires overinflated causing the odometer to be inaccurate ...



i think what i was syaing is that there are many schools of thought on how to set up the fuel system , including those that jump on the bandwagon just to make a buck ... oops did i say that ...



no one really has the cure all , its just a matter of how much you want to pay i guess , most people will get away fine with drilled banjos and the new pump . if you want to be safe do something to shorten the distance the pump on the motor has to draw fuel . put on a pressure gauge and monitor the pressure .

Out of curiosity I tried to send in my reciept for the Cummins lift pump that I bought, and Dodge denied reimbursement because: #1) I didn't buy it from Dodge and #2) the reciept doesn't have a Dodge part number on it. Oh well.

Just like mopar muscle said, it doesn't matter if the truck is stock or modified, it will eventually die because of where the pump is located.

On the same token, I'm also making over 400hp with a stock Carter pump in the stock location, but I'm on pump # 3 in 59,000 miles. I have had the airoquip fittings and lines since the truck had 10k on it, but it still has gone through 2 pumps even with the lines on. I agree with what you say... it's a good pump, just a bad spot.

I have also just replaced my original lift pump with the latest revision from Cummins, 3990105. My fuel pressure was getting close to zero at full throttle. With the new lift pump it is always more than 5 psi. These new pumps have only been available for a few months but has anyone had one fail? I am hoping this is the answer to the lift pump problem.



I got rid of my fuel pressure gauge and found a pressure switch that closes when the pressure falls below 4 psi. I am using this to turn on a Radio Shack piezo beeper to let me know the pressure has dropped. I found the pressure gauge was unreadable when I am stoplight racing.

Great talking to you at the Cummins Powerstore get together. I learned a lot from you. BTW What is the drill size for the banjo fittings between the lift pump and the filter housing? 7/32"?

I called my dealer and they said the lift pump was covered under my engine warranty, but when I called Chrysler to see about getting reimbursed for mine, they said it wasn't covered and basically hung up on me. What Service! I did give them the worse rating they could get on the phone survey when they called me back.
