New low sulfur fuel

I read somewhere that the use of only 2% biodiesel supplants the lost lubricity associated with ULSD. I'm currently running 10% (commercial grade, at a local fuel station), plus Stanadyne every tank.



As for seals, my entire fuel system plumbing is nitrile rubber - a material whose performance is degraded both by the use of biodiesel and ULSD. It doesn't appear there's any way to increase the aromatics content of the fuel, so there's nothing I can do anyway.



What about use of nitrile rubber seals in European diesels?

Is PS power steering fluid and is it mixed into the 10oz dose, doesn't seem to be enough?

NO!



It's Power Service - a diesel fuel additive sold at places like Walmart and larger truck stops - about $12 a gallon jug.

I believe most of the seals used in current fuel systems, and for the last 10 years, are Viton, which does not degrade with a lack of aromatics. I know al the seals in the CP3's are Viton but a 1965 IH tractor may NOT be so equiped.



You are right, there is no way to add the aromatics or the lubricants inherent to the fuel. All that can be done is to use seals that do not degrade and add lubricants to the finished product. That means we must rely on the correct mixture being added and a thourogh mixing process and hopefully it will bind to the fuel molecules and not settle out.

 I like the idea of ashless 2 cycle oil with MMO because it is designed to be burned.

That is correct. In an SI engine. A CI engine will run on a steady diet of just about any oil so the viability tends to blur. The non-detergent oil should be cheaper and have some better lube properties but thats another distinction that will be hard to make.

Have been useing Marvel Mystery oil since an apprentice mechanic at the old Watson/Meehan Cummins Diesel agency in S. F. since 1951. Yes Im certanly an old coot on the Cummins engines.

Have used it in my old ist. generation "93" and now use it on My 04. 5 CTD.

We used it in the pump & injector machines at Cummins.

Its a dandy lubricity additive & has been on the market since 1923. It may be called "snake oil" by people but it does a good job. Its used by lots of shops. Just go by the instructions as to amount per full tank. It works...

What do you think of the MMO and ashless oil concoction, maybe 50/50 mix? I like the idea of oil with it.

Ashless 2 Stroke Oil

Tried a test on Wallyworlds 2 asheless stroke oil and MMO.



The MMO burned clean. The Ashless left a sticky deposit on the pan that took a lot of effort to scrape off.

ULSD must reach must reach distribution and marketing points by July 15 in CA and the rest of the country by Sept 1.



ULSD fuel requirements take effect in retail locations Sept 1 in CA and Oct. 15 in the rest of the country.





Deisel classified as low sulfur may still be sold at retail locations outside CA from Oct 15 thru Dec 1, 2010.



EPA raised the sulfur tolerance from 2ppm to 3ppm. the temporary adjustment will last thru Oct. 14 2008. This means that ULSD may test as high as 18ppm.



OOIDA members have found ULSD at truck stops in Tennesse and Virginia.

I don't have any specs on Wal-Mart 2-cycle oil, but to burn cleanly, it's essential that the oil contain no bright stocks. The base stock should contain 100% solvent refined neutral oils. Bright stock (blended to obtain the desired viscosity) will produce deposits.

cerberusiam are you a chemist? If one uses fullers earth to really clean up used oil, will that hurt the lubricity? I've been told it strips out all the additives, but it did do a nice job of cleaning up the oil, including the carbon in a test we did some years back.

just use bio diesel loss alittle mileage but the truck is well lube and good hp at least the fuel by me the bad is I lost almost 5 mpg on first tank and 2. 5 and second so I just went back to regular for now if lube is a problem there will be a new additive to fix soon after or right before. specially with the performance places out there now.

If you could adequately filter the oil and achieve the proper PH it might work, but I would discourage you from trying. Used diesel oil has a lot of really ugly stuff in it.
