Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) New guy in Tahoe needs help!

Sorry this got a bit long but, I'm in a bit of a place here that's not a happy one - so please read on and help out if you can - thanks.

I installed new LP ($167 from Cummins) and new Fleetguard F/F (kit from Geno's) once running reads 11. 5# idle? Warranty replacement LP (20k ago) always made 15. 5# idle and never less than 12 WOT. Even during the recently noticed intemittency, the old LP did the same numbers - when it decided to work.

The strange thing is the turn key on "wait to start" pressure - it creeps real slow 0 to 11. 5, then real slow back to 0, takes about 12 seconds total 0 - 11. 5 - 0? (Air in hose to sender?) Old one always took about 3 - 5 seconds. Another thing, I never saw the psi drop upon increase of RPM when @ idle before, this pump drops 2 - 3# :--)

At constant 50 mph the psi is 11#, a slight acceleration on the cruise control drops to 8 - 9#, WOT 6#.

Here's my plan (looking for other suggestions folks):

1-before I convince myself it's the pump (even-though from everything I've seen here, I think it's a faulty one) I'll bleed the hose to sender and compare all #'s with Brian's mechanical gage.

2-If all #'s remain the same, the old one still works - sometimes:{ - I'll re-install it. Then box it up, go to Cummins Monday with my receipt in hand and story describing how I'm not satisfied with the numbers and want another pump as this one is defective/faulty - keeping in mind the 6# WOT.

Just remembered - the new Fuel Filter plastic was black? - I've always purchased 4/2/1 maintenance filter kits from Geno's and the filter plastic was always brown? It's also possible the filter is not the correct one ???? Not sure on this one??? I guess if the psi is still the same after doing #1 above, I'll try to put the old (brown plastic) filter back and see what the psi is before moving on to #2

Gotta love it. I'm kinda upset with this whole mess only 20k out of an LP and now the new one psi stinks. I'd be really torqued if I made a living with my truck.

I'm going out to try my #1 above and will check back / hopefully report all is well afterwards.

Joe Mc,

Yup, went round and round with the lift pump. The first one went in 2 weeks, but was never right to begin with, the second pump was even worse.

I can't remeber the psi #'s off hand, now I am running around 12 at idle, 9 cruising, and 2 at WOT.

Save your pennies and redo the fuel system like many of us are now doing.

Checked #'s w/mech gage - NG same. Compared brown filter w/new black one - big time difference. Same height, black one smaller diameter filter area and larger slots on top than brown. Swapped old filter back - same #'s.

In the process of swapping old pump back in. :( Will try w/black filter to see if numbers are same or as pre new pump install.

Should be lift pump/filter changer expert after today:rolleyes:

Old pump + new (black) filter = 15# idle, 13 - 14 cruise & 11 WOT.

Too bad it's operating intermittently the numbers are great. I'll be going to Cummins tomorrow to return/swap pump.

Probably do it w/my eyes closed next time.

Took defective / faulty pump to Cummins. Walked out with "New Engine Parts Warranty Documentation For OTC Sales" form and same pump. I could have walked out with another new pump for another $167. 39 and possibly get stuck with the other pump. No thanks!

So I'll fill out the form and wait 7 - 10 days for determination. Absurd!

GEEZ I feel better now. I thought how could I loose two in 700 miles. This is crazy. I still want the ... ..... DEALER ... ... ..... to replace mine under warranty though

Torque this I see exactly what you are seeing. I have a comp and when I am into it it sucks it down to 2. Are you adding a new pusher and is your set up similar to mine?

Not Happy Camper

I'm a bit ticked off. Just wanted to share - got a PM from Torque This. He had new pump go bad after some miles, called up and walked in w/old one not even in the box and they gave him another one no questions. I darn well better get satisfaction here. Their facility is only 2 miles from home, if I have to I will pay a visit to the Warranty Mgr. :{ :mad: :{

Latest Update

So I fax the form and wait a day. Called, finds my fax and get "it's got over 100k not covered" DUH! we're talking about pump with less than 1 hr. Uh, I'll look at fax and call when I get time. Figured I'd wait a few days and try again. Home later that night I start stewing - go to Cummins site, customer service or something like that. Has a place to send e-questions. :D I rip this guy a new one, state the name of Cummins dealer, city, state and his name. Feel not treated like customer the whole nine. Mentioned I belong to a club w/15k + members who are fanatically faith full and wouldn't be caught dead in anything w/o a Cummins - Figured it couldn't hurt. Before noon next day a voice mail at my office from Mr. "when I find time" asking me to call and inform what to do with my check:p HA!Oo. So of course I tell him to mail it to my house. forgot to mention to him - I still have the pump. Na, na, na, na, na, na! He just couldn't act right the first time had to get his but t chewed from daddy Cummins first. I'll stop now, the Zoloff hasn't started to work just yet ;)

So I guess when the check arrives I'll be locating a pump back by the tank like the rest. More to come

Wolfgang, I am going to put in an Aeromotive pump. Do a search and you'll find some info on it. Others are also using the PE4200, really nice unit also.

Joe Mc, Hope everything works out for ya man.

Received check for $167. 39 from Cummins - I still have pump too. I'd like to go the PE4200 route but, too much $ for the set up. Anything less expensive that is better than stock and easier than relocating?
