Where do I go from here?

HI I am new member-again was a member in 96-97. Had 96 3500 4x4 best truck I"ve ever owned. I was excited to order 01 HO 3500. After driving it awhile I hate this new engine! It has no low rpm torque compared to my 12v. I've had it checked out at 2 different cummins shops and have been told it was due to emmissions. It comes on strong at 2200 rpm- no load- but under that rpm its a dog. I've talked to some other 24v owners in town and they to said they didn't like it either. I don't know what to do.

Yes,the 24v has a higher power band. Yes,the mileage dropped about 1-2 mpgs because of emissions. Drive it and get used to it. A lot of ex 12v owners have the same complaint. Its a whole different animal, takes a little getting used to. The HO will out pull any stock 12v. My opinion.

I should add that mine comes on real strong from 1700rpm clear to 2600rpm. This is with the 5er and a GCVW of over 18k lbs

I agree with drawson as that is what I have now. I traded the VA not for a power increase but I think I can get better mileage. Also when I get injectors I have adjustability.

Floor it, as stated above, put an EZ box on it. you will not believe you are driving the same truck. I had the exact complaint that you have stated. My truck hauled a** from 2200 up, but was a real slug below that. At exactly 98 miles on the odometer, i put an EZ on. With the EZ box, it pulls hard from 1300 all the way up. Heck it is even pretty peppy from off idle. Drive it one time with an Ez, and you will never take it off. But the coolest part is if you need to take it off, it is a 5 minute job. Very cool. As far as the mileage gains some claim, I have not seen it, as i have been having too much fun hot roddin around. Then again, i only lasted about another 2 months before i got the itch and in went the DD3's

I wonder why they say it has 505lbs at 1600 rpm if it really doesn't. I do know you can't argue with them and win. Ididn't want to bomb it because I have 3 - 68" camaros that are bombed to the max and I hotrod them to satisfy my needs. If I bomb my truck I'm afraid I'll get out of control and men in white coats will take me away!:D HA! HA!. Oh well BOMBS-AWAY!

Welcome back Floor It!!

Do us a favor and add your signature :) I'm assuming that you have a new truck that's not broken in yet - break-in makes a big difference in performance, whether it's purely mechanical or combo of that and ECM programming... ... Marco???? So go drag something heavy around for a while :D

Completely agree with Floor it

My first truck was a 95 TD. What a truck. I always thought it was stronger than it's rated 175 California horse power would suggest. My '01. 5 doesn't tow or go ANY better than that good 'ol 12v. Absolutely love the transmission. 36k was kinda expensive for a transmission upgrade though. It's a shame you have to bomb the 24v HO so it'll run like a stock 12v!!!!! I tell myself the transmission and disc brakes are worth it.

Actually, the transmission and disc brakes are worth it. Those brakes in the 95 really sucked!

Just a small mod will fix the low end grunt

Floor it, what I would do is pick up either an EZ or a set of 275 injectors.

Both of these give the bottom end extra grunt.

I have only the 275's and they certainly do give it quite a bit more on the low RPM's... try it! :D

????

Sure can't understand what you guys are talking about??? I have the same truck and just love the power and torque that I am seeing. I have no engine upgrades what so ever (just like to monitor everything). Pulls my Bigfoot up every hill that I have found.

P. S. true that I don't do 1/4-miles nor sled pulls!

Hmmmmm?? Strange, my 12V stock couldn't hold a candle to my ETH. My 99 ETC slightly BOMBed would keep up with my stock ETH. As far as pulling goes with 13,000 lbs out the back my ETH will take off in 2nd gear without touching the throttle. Can shift to 6th gear and from1600 RPM on up it just pulls. And the more miles it gets the better it pulls. These motors really do need time to break in to show what they are all about, but maybe my 12V was a dog or something cause both of my 24v's would out pull it from 1400 RPM on up... ... ... ... ... ..... Pete

Hiperf360 had a 12V truck that ran 98MPH in the 1/4. 01. 5 with the ETC 5-speed will outgrunt that 12v truck easy and its stock. The 12V truck would get it on the highway with a 20K load. But around town the 24V kills the undervalved truck. When I was looking for trucks All I had to do was drive one 24V truck. I then lost interested in the 12V pretty quick :)

I know I've read alot of different opinions- I've been reading these pages for 4 months before I joined- and I am not sure why there is so much differences. My buddy has a 97" 5-speed and we went to colorado and his pulled the steep winding roads alot better than mine! Better mpg too. Talked to other 24v owners in CO. and most of them liked the higher rpm but hated the lack of low end power. Only solution seems to be BOMB IT. I'll have to be sneeky so D. C doesen't find out. To those who asked -7986 miles alot of it towing. The paint is burned of exhaust manifold.

Smog

Remember they went 24V for the better emisions. I noticed alot of 12v trucks smoke leaving intersections ETC even stock. And you never see a stock 24v truck doing that. It just makes the fuel come on a little more gentle at low rpm. The 24v+computer control cleaned the emisions up enough to not need a cat converter. I have an EZ on my truck and it definately helped the low rpm problem. Its got enough grunt to rattle the drivetrain realy easy if your towing something heavy and get into to low of a gear. Its also very EZ(haha) to remove. Some people that say it takes 5 minutes are crazy... . its more like 3 lol

Here is my 2c. Get an EZ box, it'll will give you back your low end torque. Cant say anything about injectors cuz mine are stock ones. Find some one who will loan you an EZ and you will be hooked.

I appreciate everyone's input . I should have never let my membership run out, that way I would have known what to expect. I probably still would have bought it because I love the 6 speed transmission. Hey Bad340Fish , I might have camaros but cudas rock too! Is your car street legal. I go down to Guy Coopers house and ride dirt bikes once and awhile might have to look you up and talk about drag racing and diesel trucks. Tulsa isn't that far away:)
