I have my stock tires (235/80/17) on with plans to go new. I would like to put "taller tires on to help with highway rpm I have 4:10 on a dually. I would like a all terrain type tire as I am on the beach alot. What size would give me a 3:56 ratio? I have read alot about Nito and they appeal to me. I would also need to keep my stock rims for now.:confused::confused:

Can't answer your gearing question. You didn't tell us what transmission you have. Multiply your 6th gear ratio times your rear end ratio (4. 10) and you will have your final drive ratio. If it's a G-56 it's approximately . 78 x 4. 10. If it's a six speed automatic it's something like . 65 x 4. 10.

Not with 17's. If you go to 19. 5's, you can go taller,BUT, the rear tires will be touching each other, which will 1, make heat, 2, if a pebble or rock gets past the wheel into where the tires are together, kiss two tires goodbye. Maybe a spacer between the duals, 'til you run outa lug stud. How's about a Gear Vendors O/D unit?

I thought about making the switch to tall/bigger tires then blew it off when I realized I was going to have to run spacers out back, not to mention the extra leverage it places on all of you frontend suspension and steering components.

I was looking at 265/75, or even 285/75's. Then I noticed a large percentage of members having problems with such things as Ball Joints,"Death Wobble' etc. all were ones who had switched out of OEM.

Im running Firestone Transforce AT's cant beat them for the money im really happy with them. I wanted Mich's but they only made the LTX M/S in white lettering which i cant use when rotating all six.

I just got done rotating all six of my LTX M/S, and the white letters are still facing out. I followed the pattern in the owners manual. The white lettering was no problem at all.

Been there done that with the General that came with it.

The only problem is the outside rears have to stay in the back unless broken down and remounted due to the reverse off set. My O/S rears wore out way to soon compared to the other four.

By the way jaysyl nice looking rig!!!;)

The outside rears do stay on the back, they switch sides. With the way the owners manual says to do it, the outside rears always stay on the outside rear. They just switch sides. pg 280 in the owners manual. This is my first 6 wheel truck. I am just saying, with the white letter tires, or the black letter tires this is the way the manual says to rotate the tires. The stock General were black letter, but some of the new trucks in 03 04 and 05 came with white letter Goodyears. Is the problem with the direction of the outside rears when they tires swith sides?

Boy those general tires sure sucked. :-laf Here is a link to a thread about my stock Generals https://www.turbodieselregister.com...n-discussions/204591-do-i-need-new-tires.html

Thanks for the comment on the truck. White trucks do look nice. Did your Travel trailer come that way with no stickers? I like it.

Jay...

Yes I know about the owners manny showing the tire rotation. On my 99 3500 4x4 Dually I always rotated the tires in the following.

Left front, to inside right rear.

Right front, to inside left rear

Outside left rear, to left front.

Outside right rear, to right front.

Inside left rear, to outside left rear.

Inside right rear, to outside right rear. Whew!!!!!!!!!!!

Now doing this rotation requires BSW, with no white lettering. My 05 came with Generals w/ white lettering. The idea is to have all six being rotated at each tire rotation every 10K miles. Also each tire will spin in the opposite direction and each tire will eventually see the front axel. Youll find this rotation very effective. My 99 went 150K on the Mich 215/85-16's. Also I only balance the fronts at each rotation. I couls have probably gone more than the 150K had the side walls showed sever cracking.

Jay... .

If your just switching the Outside rears from side to side at each rotation you will notice excellerated wear on them, and the'll look real flat/square in wear appearance.

Regarding my Travel trailer I ordered it from Monoco without the graphics, and I love it make for much easier cleaning and no warrenty issues.

One more thing. I was looking at you pics. That one with the quad on the trailer in the dez, Where is that?, it really looks familar. I have been into offroading for since I was 10 and know the so calif deserts like the back of my hand. Was the pic taken between Jawebone Canyon and Randsburg?. It only a guess.

I thought about replacing my 6 originally equipped 215/85/16 Goodyear tires on my, then, 95 Dodge Ram DRW with larger tires. I call a Dodge/Chrysler factory rep and asked what size I could go to. He advised me to stay with the same size tires the truck came with because all the handling and braking characteristics of the truck were designed for that size tire. He said that by altering the tire size, I would grossly effect steering, handling and braking of the truck, which could cause a safety issue. I kept the same size tires, but a better brand.

We have found out yhat in sand you do not need a off road tire. thay will pull the sand out from you to fast then you are on the frame.

Mickeyblueeyes-

First welcome to TDR and congrats on your new ride. To answer your question on a taller tire there really isnt an option unless you go with 19. 5 or run spacers on your stock rims... . which I dont recommend. There are other ways to bring your diff ratio down but they cost big $$$$. Note: I am currently running 265's on my dually because I got 4 of them for free!! The tires look great, ride great, handle well, and dont rub HOWEVER they arent wearing well because they are a little too wide for the stock rim. Also Note: The 265's are the same in heighth as stock but are a little wider. You would have to jump up to 285's to get a taller tire which again will require spacers and of course wont wear well. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Grizzly, I am going to do just that, I like Nito so I will look at them.

What Nitto's are you looking at? I have a set of 285/70/17's Nitto Terragrapplers on my truck and wouldn't recomend them to anybody because the wear is horrible. I'm down to around 7/32nds in around 5,200 miles.#@$%! I don't have a dually so i can't help you on the size.

My $0. 02

I have an 07 Dullie Quad 4X4 and have been running the 305/70/17 E range Nitto Terragrapplers for 40k now with no issues what so ever. No Death Wobble, and NO front end issues with ball joints. Low road noise and smooth as glass. They work awesome off road and in the sand. I go to the beach to fish and I have never once got stuck. I do run a 1 1/2" spacer out back and a 2" level kit up front. They look killer on the truck to. I have had the D range tires and they did promote Death wobble. I completely solved it with the E range. Have not had it since.

Yes I do run them on stock rims. CurtLee, all I can say is wow. Mine are wearing like iron. You must either be heavy on the throttle or you have a pumped up motor or both. I talked with my tire guy and he said it is not a problem to run the tires on a smaller rim. Preferebly a 7. 5 inch rim is recomended but it does not pinch the tire too bad at 6 inches. Mickey I hope this helps you. Just be sure to get the E rated tire. You will really like it.

Its a stock truck other than exhaust. I can get a little hard on the throttle at times. I'm not the only one with this problem try searching nitto tires and see what you get.

mickeyblueyes;

if you do go with the dune grapplers i would get them siped because it doesn't look like they are.
