I have finally decided to trade in my 1998 1500 Quad Cab Long Bed 5. 9 Liter for a 2001 2001 2500 Cummins which I have always regretted not purchasing.

Since I am new to the Cummins powered Ram I would like to get some feedback regarding the proper type of oil that should be used. I have read that sythetics should only be used after the breakin. So what Brand does everyone suggest?
Are there any precautions that i should take when the truck is new?
Much of the info may be in the owners manual but I would like some first hand suggestions.
Is there any other info that I should be aware of with the new Cummins?

Oils that rate very highly for diesels are such as the Chevron Delo, and Shell Rotella T and Premium Blue. I have run a product called Super Blue from Nemco it's another 15W40 HD oil. It's critical that the product meet CH-4 spec for low ash content. Don't run cheap junk gasser oils and change the oil when it's due. I live farther north and in the Winter I run a pure synthetic in winter to aid in starting. My choice up there is Nemco SMO 5W30.

Are the oils that are mentioned redily available at good auto parts stores or do I need to order them on-line. The oil that was mentioned are not synthetics correct?

I have also read that it is best to use the Fleetguard Filters. Is this correct?

Thanks for the quick responses.

Rotella, Delo and Premium Blue are not synthetics and should be readily available. There are Rotella SB and Premium Blue 2000 semi-synthetics on the market so read the label. The Fleetguard Stratopore filters are very good filters, I use them and Rotella T oil in my truck.

You should use a non-synthetic such as a rotella, or one of the others mentioned for ??10000 miles untill the rings seat. Everyone differs in opinion on how many miles is right. I have even heard the opinion it is best to put in synthetic right from the factory, but you may never seat your rings right, robbing power, and fuel mileage.
I like Amsoil synthetic, but there is a lot of good synthetics out there. There is a lot written in this site about oils. You might want to do a search. . .

Go to the local Cummins store and see if they will give you a deal on oil -and filters. Be sure to use the strat filter like LSSMITH Said. Prem Blue is great. My local Cummins Shop said that the synthetic blend they have - isn't recommended for 50,000. I have 42,000 on my 2001 - won't be long..... BTW - check out th edata on changing the fuel filter, it's a snap on the 01's, but learn to do it before you need to in the field, an dbe sur to hav the right tools... 1 and 1/8 socket(I think)

Amsoil all the way,but only after 10,000.
Series 3000 5w 30HD for the engine,75w 140 for the differentials, and if you have an auto transmission use amsoil universal trans fluid, these are all full synthetic, made a world of difference for me #ad
