Hi,

Glad to finnialy become a member of the TRD. I even met a TRD member in my home town today. After reading several archive posts I have a few questions. This is the first diesel that I have ever had, what is the difference between #1 & #2 diesel. I would like to get 250 to 300hp out of my truck, what would be a good plate and injector combo to start with? I know that I have get guages and upgrade the transmission. What is a fair price for a shop too time my injection pump?

Thanks for your imput.

Jason,

Welcome aboard, you will find a wealth of information on this board. There are many different combinations of power upgrades available (read through the boards).

Let me tell you what I did..... and I could not be any more pleased with this combination and performance. Keep in mind, this is only a moderate upgrade and it works well for me and my application.

1. Added gauges, EGT, Boost, Trans temp.
2. TST #8 cam plate (230/605)
3. AFC star wheel turned about 25 clicks towards the motor.
4. Slid plate slightly forward, past the stock mark and had some minor adjustments made to the pump, to allow slightly higher reving (More power and better shift points).
5. I saved the best for last - I added a Bill Kondolay DTT (Diesel Transmission Technology) valve body and torque converter and WOW! Now all that power gets transferred to the ground.

Future upgrade may include a set of 215hp injectors to round out the package, but as is right now, the truck really preforms. Every time I drive it, I am amazed at the difference Bill's TC & VB make. Link on over to his site and check them out - If you want the Very Best!

Jason, welcome. #1 diesel is a more highly refined diesel also known as kerosene. As far as our diesel engines are concerned #1 is mainly used as a winter additive with #2 to keep it from gelling in cold temps. The winter ratio of 1 to 2 is usually blended for the area in which it is sold, it will most likely come blended from the pump whether you want it or not. #1 diesel contains less BTUs than #2 and the blend will lead to poorer fuel economy. While straight #1 is used in Arctic conditions it lacks the lube qualities of #2 and must be used with an additive to avoid injection pump damage.

Jason,

To get your truck to 250hp, you would need a #6 TST plate (or equivalent). As far as the transmission goes, how many miles are on the truck? If the truck has a fair amount of miles on it, you should probably consider a complete rebuild when upgrading, otherwise a new torque convertor and valve body might hasten the demise of your existing transmission. Prices for a transmission upgrade will be determined by what you decide about a rebuild. Do the gauges first, I recnetly had my transmission rebuilt and had gauges and a #6 plate on order, and the gauges are backordered. I put the plate in without the gagues, but got nervous, so I pulled it out. I finally realized it's not worth messing up things because I got impatient. Good luck with whatever bomoing you do.

JBoesl, welcome!

Tschwab's advice is exactly what I did to my '94 auto. It pulls everything I want at any speed up to 80 mph. I also put a straight pipe in for my muffler, but would recommend a new 4" muffler and tailpipe if money is no problem. I also use a K&N air filter. You will read many things about K&N's, from the rediculous to the sublime, but I have run them for years in both gas and diesel engines with great results. The seal around the filter is just more critical in the diesel.

My transmission is stock and has 147,00 miles on it. My son pulls a 24'gooseneck with 50 hp tractor and mower every day, no problems. Upgrading the transmission is great and Bill K. is the way to go if you do that. If you drive sensibly, a good transmision will hold up. If you have the money and really want to "enjoy" the extra power, get Bill to work his majic. Go for 250 hp instead of 230 and let the good times roll!!

The longer you drive and mess with these trucks, the more you will appreciate the Cummins engine. As I say in my signature, " If you can't Dodge it, RAM it!"

I am no expert, but will help any way I can.

Big John

Jason:

Welcome to the TDR Website!!

You have already received some very good,
accurate information from the other members.

As a reference for you, I am at about
380 H. P. with the modifications I have.
You can look at my signature to see what
I have done. The 370 Diamond B injectors
REALLY woke up my engine along with a few
others in "our 12 valve section. " It does
not take alot to get over 300 H. P. with
these engines.

This is a GREAT website with ALOT of
very knowledgable people.

Again, welcome aboard!
