Great start

Good work P'wagn! Soon we can build a database with the membership info, and start "being a club".

It'll be good to meet everyone in person.

Hey LOtero, I saw your brother's QCab in the TA-V parking lot. Didn't get a good look but did see the TDR sticker...

must be good for another 5-8 Lb-Ft ;)

Later

yup that is his stomping grounds, i am going to have to get him to start posting, that tdr sticker sure made his truck kick mines ars! or maybe it was the power pup i dunno one or the other

WOW there's peaple here

Havent checked in this forum for a while, a year ago it was just me and pretty much one other guy so I've paid it no attention. Seems like NM has gotten a few more TDR guys, good to see. I am in Las Cruces but I am in the guard and go up to Kirtland once a month. I am working on the weekends ofcourse so breakfasts are probably out for me but I hope I get to see some of you guys and check out the trucks.

hey hayden your in the guard eh? i assume its air guard considering you say kirtland, if so where do you work? i am a crew chief and a full timer, lemme know i would like to check out your truck. d'oh! now that i looked at your rig pics i have seen your truck, i waved at you last drill by the club, thought you were kicklighter for a sec!

Good work P'wagn! Soon we can build a database with the membership info, and start "being a club".

All I've been doin is PM'ing the people from new mexico asking them if they want to join. Everybody I have PM'd so far has said yes. :) I still have about half the list left to contact. I also made up some flyers. I wrote a page about TDR and our club, then stapled the TDR membership drive page to it. I haven't started distributing those to the unsuspecting Cummins owners winshields yet, though.

I already have a database with the info in it. I put everyones names/add/ph#/email into an excell DB.

Hey Luis, should I just go ahead and add Mario and Daves names to the list? What about Eric L. , did he ever join? What is daves handle? DSilva?

i would assume they would join, i was going to send them an email yesterday, along with some of the other guard guys and i completely spaced it  , but i will do it today, so i would just add em, as for eric he can be hmmm unpredictable at times so i would take his word for it. not mine. the guage install is done i did all the in cab stuff yesterday, i am just lacking a boost bolt and my pan should be done today, so just neeed to plug in underhood stuff and it will be done! gotta do shift kit too, hey i was thinking about doing it at the auto hobby shop, whaddaya think?

So did you drill for the thermocouple already? So everything is done except the boost and trans?

The hobby shop would be cool. closer for me than your house is.

let me know.

no i havent done any of the underhood stuff, all the wires and connections are run but need to do the thermocouple, and the boost bolt, whenever it comes in, after we do the shift kit, the pan will already be tapped so it will just be plug and play

sounds like you are on the right track, if i had a 6 speed i would put boost egt and fuel pressure in an A pillar mount, thats what i have and i finished it last night, but havent taken any pictures of it yet, but will later. i finally got my boost bolt in and crushed 2 compression fittings trying to get it right, but i finally got it going. i am running about 27-28 psi at wot, but at idle it goes down to 0  is this normal? did i screw something up? dunno but shift kit, pyro thermocouple and transmission pan/temp probe go in tomorrrow, so i will be taking pics and keeping you guys posted :D

Feeling a little nervous about putting a drill to my $8000 engine

I'm also at this point not sure which guages to use, for sure pyro, maybe fuel LP (electric or fuel in the cab), boost? Anyone have input on that?

It was hard for me to do it, too, but as soon as I statred, off I went. It took me about 30 minutes to drill and tap my manifod (which included taking off the fender liner - something 2nd gen owners probably don't have to do). I read up on all the posts on the board and decided to do it without removing the turbo. No problems in 20,000+ miles.

Louis - 0 psi at idle is correct. Whn I installed mine the first time, I jumped in the truck, started it up and revved the engine. Didn't get any boost. Took everything apart, checked all the connections, then tried it again. No boost. Grabbed my air compressor, hooked it up to the boost gage, and I got boost. Put everything back together, tried it again, and STILL GOT NO BOOST! I was a little p**** off. Decided I wasn't going to get anywhere mad, so I jumped in the truck to grab some lunch. As soon as I accelerated down the street, I GOT BOOST!

I have been told by several members that they had the exact same problem!

PwerWagn - I was out of town. I will PM you my info this morning. Also, I have received my offer to relocate - it was crappy, so I'm staying here. I'll still have to travel some, (about half the time), but that's better than before. I am available for any position you may need help with. I am also working on a NMTDR logo. I'll post when I get something. I thought Phil could make some for us.

Welcome WBlackberg! Some of us have started getting together for lunch, Saturday breakfast etc. Keep watching the posts for opportunities to meet the group. You're probably aware from followkng this thread that we are organizing a New Mexico TDR chapter. Hope you will consider joining us.

See you around

I have to break down (<= maybe a real bad choice of words) and install gauges, at least a pyro. I've been towing with mods, and after reading some other forums, I'm scared to do it anymore.

Do you guys drill the manifold without removing it, or removing the turbo from the engine?? How do you keep drill cuttings out of important places? Any tips?? If I have to remove the exhaust manifold to drill it, I think I will order an ATS performance manifold. From pics it looks like these manifolds have a boss in the casting for installing a pyro. anyone have any experience with the ATS manifold?

Any info greatly appreciated. I will also go out to the other forums and do a search.

WRS

Yeah, I drilled without removing the turbo.

First off, use a SHARP drill. Nothing cuts worse than a dull drill bit. I used a shop vac to suck up any drill dust as I was drilling. I kept the bit well oiled, too. Once I was through, I vacuumed everything well.

When I tapped, I used a good cutting oil as well.

When I finished, I started the truck and let it idle a minute or two. Don't rev it, and the turbo will spin very little.

Shut her down, and installed the fittings (used a good never seize on the pyro fitting).

That's all I did. I have over 20k since I installed it - never a problem.

Now, when I did it, I pulled the fender liner out (just remove all the bolts and slip it out of the way. My brill bit was a bit long, so I had to use a right angle adapter (I have it if you need to borrow it). Just hand tapped with a tee-tap.

I installed mine on the back part of the down-pipe just above the turbo.

All this is in the forum if you search. That's where I found it.

Twolf and WRS:

I have installed many set of gauges. If either of you need help (I know youre close to me WRS) let me know. I have right angle drills, taps, etc. I wouldnt ever own a diesel w/o gauges. you just dont realize how fast EGT can climb under load. Especially when you would least expect it. So Juan, did you install the pyro in the downpipe (thats kinda the jist I got from your last reply)? If you install it in the downpipe, then there is absolutley no chance of shavings reaching the turbo. When I do pre-turbo installs (in the ex manifold) I use some grease on the bit, and I have some super dooper mini magnets that I put on the drill bit (3 of them) and that keeps most of the shavings on the bit. Even if you get a little shavings in the manifold, it shouldnt affect the turbo.

Luis, Yeah, 0 boost at idle is totally normal (I think you already asked me that, right??). If you rev it, you can make some boost. I can get up to about 10psi if I rev and let off, rev and let off, over and over. Remember, boost is also sorta related to EGT. fuel=egt. dump some fuel in and you will make more boost. Does your EGT gauge work right? Glad you got the valvebody re-installed. If you need anymore help, let me know.

I got your PM Juan, thanks.

FYI-I might not respond to this thread or PM's in the next few days, My grandpa passed away sat. night. :(

Jeff,

Sorry to hear about your Grandfather. Our condolences go out to you.

I installed pre-turbo in the manifold just ahead of the turbo mounting flange. Haven;t had any problems - be sure you aren't centered in the manifold, though, as there is a thick web down the center.

I'm on the road this week (trying to finish up some projects) but I'll be checking the board at nights.

Juan

Thanks Juan.

Oh, okay, I gotcha.

when I read this
I installed mine on the back part of the down-pipe just above the turbo.
I just figured that meant you installed it in the downpipe. I guess I didnt see the "just above the turbo" part. Yeah, I believe on 12V motors you install the thermo 5/8" from the back side of the manifold (to miss the divider) and 2" from the turbo flange.

Sincere condolences

Jeff,

We're so sorry for your loss. It's always rough.

When you are back in the swing of things, I'll PM you about doing a gauge install.

Thanks for the information.
