History of Snow Plowing in Northern Maine

Spring is here so I can use my toys.....

Not sure on the running gear.

The front axle is a variant of our front axle, as is the rear. Last time I spoke with AAM they said the rear axle in the Dodge actually had better bearing per the Dodge contract. The G80 gov-lok isn't an option on the Dodge but you can count that as a plus. I am less than impressed with them.

Explain that to my boss who owns my 2014 2500 CTD with less than 15K miles, when the entire rear diff failed so bad, they had to replace all the guts and housing. I went 10 working days without my work truck.

I personally would never purchase a DMAX, as well as my boss, which already bought an 05 DMAX for me in 05. But because of the rear diff and poor MPG, he will not buy another Dodge CTD. He just bought a Ford Powerstroke Transit 250 van replacing an older GMC 2500 Gasser truck with service bed.

Funny, doesn't Chevy/RAM use AAM axles?

Looks like it.

They fell off the radar in favor of the cheaper and just as effective Donaldson IIRC.

Well Ted it seems as if the story has changed from "Just as effective Donaldson IIRC"

Yup... I wonder what caused those to fail??

RVTRKN, did you get any feed back on the cause of the failures?

I always thought they were the same as well, AH64ID seems to think otherwise.

No, re-read what I wrote. They are the same, but not identical.

The bearings are slightly different in the Dodge version, since the Dodge contract spec'd longer life bearings.

They both use the AAM 11.5" (even the 11.8" is a variant of the 11.5"), but there are differences. The center sections were cast differently until late MY06, and the axle tubes, AFIK, are still different diameters. The Dodge uses are larger tube than the GM trucks; however they all rated the same.

Same basic axle with minor differences. The differences are direct from AAM.

GM also uses a harmonic balancer on the pinon of the rear axle that Dodge does not.

AH64ID, no one has contacted us about the rear diff, but the dealer that performed the repair has some issues with their customers service. Their quick to return a call if your interested in buying a new car/truck, but very rarely return your calls when needing service or info on your vehicle in service. Another issue my Boss has with Dodge, I know its not representative of dealers as a whole, but its left a sour taste in his mouth. As far as different axles, I'm not aware of any difference.

The GM transfer case is a smaller one than the Dodge.

GM suspension is also much softer.

I cannot speak to their newer IFS longevity, but even with the BJ and wheel bearing maintenance on my 05 it's been better than the GM IFS's I have been around.

The Allison is a good trans, but it's not as good as the Internet wants everyone to believe.

As bad as it may be to have a bearing in the rear end that's just a bit smaller, The GMC has NOT HAD ANY SORT OF PROBLEMS NO Codes, hasn't skipped a beat. Don't know about the DEF usage I've never needed it so I don't know if it uses a lot or not?

I drove it for a couple of hours across Texas so I cant say what if any difference in Pulling power as compared to the Cummins but it seems to be equal to or better than the Dodge in lots of respects just the FACT that it now has about 8k on it and has had NO PROBLEMS is something that you don't see a lot of in the 4th gen section ;)

So how much time do you spend on the GM forums??

Most people don't go to the forums when everything works 100%, they simply show up to complain.
