Harry,
The ATF+4 is a specification from Daimler Chrysler, and can be used in Dodge vehicles where the performance specification requires ATF+,+2,+3,or +4 as well as MS-7176 A,B,C,D & E;MS-9602.

Your 99'Ram, if it has the automatic does require an ATF with the +4 specification. And yes, Amsoil does meet those specifications with their ATF+4 as well as their newer "Universal" formulation.

The 99' REQUIRES ATF+3. (Owners manual p. 201)You MAY use Mopar's ATF-4 which is backwards compatible. But check the +4 price. My dealer offered to sell me a gallon at a special price of $30.

I wouldn't mind replacing the "standard" ATF in my transmission - but the trouble and expense of some of the "better" aftermarket synthetics makes me stop for serious thought. My AT already has over 105,000 miles on it, with LOTS of heavy pulling and shifts perfectly - but I *might* be tossing my money away switching ATF at this late date?

I wonder how may here have actually thoroughly purged all the old stuff out and replaced it with synthetic, and if any noticeable improvement in performance, temp, etc resulted?

Gary - IMHO you're doing just what you're supposed to be doing. Amsoil's first batch of ATF-4 CAUSED the trannys to slip. My local transmission guru said ATF-3 has worked just fine for a long time - just change it every 20K miles.

not saying anything bad about amsoil when I
started this post I was trying to feel out
just Mopar+4 not amsoil+4

tlippy,
Your IMHO about Amsoil's ATF + 4 is incorrect.
The "First batch" did not not cause any transmissions to slip. Nor did the middle batch, or the last batch. That must be a rumor or a myth.
Maybe someone had the clutches totally varnished and then it would slip until it was cleaned. This would happen when you put it ANY new, clean oil in a transmission that had heavily varnished clutches.

Harry,
I don't think anyone read it in a bad way. I was just trying to clear up another myth.
