New multilayer head gasket from cummins?

Thanks, TDR Staff

Is this for real???

we need 1st gen twins!!

I read an article in a mag a while ago about a new multi layer head gasket for the new CRD engine and can withstand extreme boost pressures without the need for fire rings. This is supposed to be a direct replacement for the 24v engine also.

Has anyone used this gasket instead of the fire ring option yet. How well does it work?

Any thoughts concerns comments?

dang, i just did a hg and o-rings on mine. Wish I would have known about that sooner. Oh well. It ought to work well.

i believe all the 3rd gen engines have the MLS [MultiLayerSteel] gaskets in them. . from what i have read in the 3rd gen forums, ±50psi seems to be the max safe zone

Yup - but I remember seeing that Piers had a twin turbo 3rd Gen that was running 70psi on a daily basis without issues. I dunno... I'd have to think that the MLS gasket would hold better than a regular B5. 9 or ISB gasket which is good to about 50psi in OEM form.

The VW TDIs also run an MLS gasket. Incidences of those engines blowing HG's is extremely rare. Then again, not too many folks run much more than 30psi through 'em. I never had a problem with my old TDI and the Old Lady's TDI has almost 274k on the clock...

Are these gaskets like the Cometics? If so, they might be good. The cometics are the only gasket I have used so far that live in my blown Hemi. But then again its only 18 psi. not 50+psi.

I put a 05 H/G on my 2nd gen , had the head decked 10 ths and never could get it to seal tried different torque settings but still leaked oil in the water , put the stock one back on and no probs ,, go figure

blow off valves are set at 60 psi on my truck, stock head gask and bolts.

1400 deg egt's and 60 psi back pressure is max also with the fuel I have, and that will take out the head gasket faster then high boost pressure alone.

The 3rd Gen MLS gasket is a fine piece of work much superior to a 2nd gen roofing paper type of gasket in a 0-60psi application.

The only problem is that a 3rd gen MLS gasket cannot be made to work with an O ring/fire ring setup since the gasket is not perfectly round around the cylinder tops.

Either way excess temps will tax this gasket as it would on a 2nd gen type of gasket.
