New needs some advice

I need some advice from the experts:

1) My baby has 20,600 miles, is it normal for the rear end to whine for awhile when it is cold?

2) I bought my truck in March '01. Has anyone had any problems with a rear main seal this early in Life? I saw some 'dampness' on the bottom of the clutch housing at the last oil change.

3) My first mod will be to install a set of gauges, is there a back issue that deals with the do's and don'ts of wondshield pillar

installation?

Issue 34 has a good article no gauge selection, can't help with the rest.



In 6 CTD's I've never had a rear end whine when cold, and it gets plenty cold here.



Maybe someone else will chine in, I hate to take my truck to the stealers for anything.

I have never heard of a whine in the rearend. You should check the fluid level asap, and probally drain & refill it. Maybe it was run through deep water or maybe it's low. When the temps are cold 75W90 can be thick but I have not heard any of them whine. I run Synthec in mine, but never heard the rearend in mine act up before switching.

Thanks guys, I'm with you, the only time I've ever heard a rear end whine was right before it ate itself. The stealer told me it was fine, sounds like par for the course. This stealer also told me that a 'dampness' with a formed drop of oil on the bottom of the clutch housing wasn't grounds to remove the transmission and inspect the rear main seal.

A drip on the bell housing could be getting there from valve cover gasket, blow by bottle or several seemingly unrelated spots, oil travels, sometimes first class ( incognito ) and eventually ends up in the gutter. Don't wish for a rear main. The stealers destroyers will have to pull the transmission ;and unbolt and raise the engine. If you think about how many bolts that are removed, and subtract the number that actually get reinstalled, and of thoes reinstalled how many are tightened to the proper torque:{ #@$%!

Replaced carrier bearings

in Dana 80 under warranty at about 12,000 miles. Replace rear axel bearing and seal at about 2 years.
