Pyro prob (isspro)

Hey all.

OK, I have a Leak in my rebuilt 5600 transmission (front area. . Main?). . said in this trhead...

https://www.turbodieselregister.com...ion-1998-5-2002/215926-seems-i-have-leak.html

I also replaced my TransferCase a while back and it is leaking from the rear Seal on the driveline... #@$%!

Just curious as to what is available out there for replacement trans and or without the T/C. . I hardly use 4X4 so if a sweet transmission is out there that works to the 2nd gen 5. 9 without the 4x4, then that would be fine... . I would like to hear opinions or links to websites... . Eaton? Or whatever?

I have some money coming in and I am going to get a new power box. . I have some Money around tax time to put into this if I can. . so just looking for options. . I can always keep oil in the transmission until then. .

Your NV241HD T-Case is a pretty great unit. You might consider having it repaired. I too have had a 241 leak at the rear seal. It was a quick fix and never had an issue again.

If you really want to replace the unit, I believe Atlas II makes a T Case that will work in your situation (either with or without an adapter plate). The Atlas II was designed for the serious rock crawler crowd. I usually has a numerically high ratio (4:1) which you may not like. However I bet you could order any ratio you need. I do think you will spend a lot on the Atlas II.

The other option would be to go back a few years and use the NP(also NV) 205. The first generation Dodge's used this T-Case and most people consider it to be bulletproof. It is a cast iron gear driven unit with a 2:1 ratio (our 241's use a 2. 71:1 if I remember correctly).

I also believe Borg Warner makes T-Cases for some of the import trucks. I don't know if they have anything that will easily mate up to your transmission and/or will survive the torque of the Cummins.

Again, in my humble opinion, I would have the 241HD repaired. It's inexpensive to have the seal replaced and again in my opinion, the 241 is really a great T-Case.

Good Luck

you missed my dilemma . .

I am looking for a better or different Transmission...

I recently replaced my T/C and it is leaking yes but that is not my big problem. I was wondering if there is a Eaton Fuller 9 speed that would work with our Cummins...

Our low gear is 5. 6:1. . several of the Eaton Fuller transmissions have a low gear of 12:1... I use my T/C in low range 2wd to maneuver my heavy trailer. . With a Eaton transmission, I wouldn't need the Transfer Case.

So, does anyone know what transmission either manual or Automatic like a Eaton-Fuller that would work with our trucks?

Oh, I guess I need to learn how to read. Sorry Eric. As to a transmission, I know there were several varieties of Allison used behind a 5. 9 Cummins in medium duty applications. I also have read that Sun Coast has adapted the Allison 1000 to work in our trucks. As for manual transmissions, there is a NV 5600HD transmission, which should be stronger than our 5600.

But to address your question, about a Eaton, I would start by asking Freightliner and Blue Bird what transmissions they use in their trucks (FL60 and 70) as they use a 5. 9 is some of these medium duty applications. I suppose the issue you would face is space to make it fit under the truck. The one engine/transmission swap I performed (on a chevy s-10), we needed to add a body lift as well as cut and pound the "hump" in order to make everything fit. Eaton's web site shows they do manufacture medium and light duty transmissions.

Sorry I could not be much help. I do wish you luck and will follow this thread as I too am a the point of needing to rebuild/replace my 5600.

Thanks Ron

That is a good Idea looking at freightliner. . Are our trucks a little bigger in the underside than your S-10?. . I would think so...

Might be better to just get a med. Duty truck!. . lol. . Don't have $80K though

The Allison 1000 is that an Automatic?. . Would the NV241 bolt up to it?

Eric,

The Allison 1000 is what you find behind the Chevy Duramax. It's a tough 5 or 6 speed transmission (depending on year). Chevy uses the NV271/273 (same as Dodge and I believe Ford). I also believe the nv271 has the same bolt pattern as the nv241.

You are also right about the S-10 not having as much room as the Dodge full size. I should have been more clear as I was trying to make the comparison of replacing the 5600 with an Eaton unit (as in the Eaton might be a bit larger than the 5600).

One other bit of advice. If you search this forum, there is a heated thread about a gentleman who swapped out his manual transmission for an automatic. He went through DTT (fine folks) and had one hell of a time getting everything to work.

I'm going to put a call into an acquaintance of mine at Freightliner. I'll ask him if he knows which manual and auto transmission are being used under the FL50, 60 and 70. I'll report back anything I learn. Also, I understand the folks at Blumenthals and Standard Transmission are great people. I'll bet they have some ideas as to either making what you have work or replacing it with something that will work the way you want.

Good luck

Ron
