Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) New or used 12v engine?

Does anybody know where I could find a good deal on a new or used 12v engine? My brother-in-law's 97 12v 5sp finally gave up after 750,000 miles. :{ All we really need is the short or long block. Everything else is good enough to swap over. Thanks.

Have you quoted a rebuild instead of a new engine? I guess its possible that a new engine would be less, dunno... There were a few listings in the classifieds last week, theyre prolly still there...

Yeah he drives over 400 miles a day. Just driving down the freeway and threw a rod. Now he is depressed because he was trying to get to a million miles. :{

I have looked at a few rebuilt, but was hoping to find something less than $4000 by the time you add in shipping and all.

I would recommend buying a new shortblock from cummins, having a good machine shop machine th heads and you reassemble them. Get a cummins manual and your good to go

Don't fool with junk buy a new engine from Cummings. Anyonw that drives that much need good stuff

Call your nearest Cummins distributor and price a ReCon or rebuilt from Cummins engine. Should be about half the price of new and I believe has a warranty. When Cummins rebuilds them they replace just about everything.

I would recommend rebuilding it yourself or having a good deisel tech you know do it. A cummins recon might be a good option depending on warranty and price. A engine can be rebuilt better or as good as a cummins one, just replace everything with cummins parts and follow all torque specs and make sure everything is within tolerances. The trouble is people try to rush (rebuilder's especially) and then you get a POS.
