Welcome to the club! compared to my truck pulling similar weight at simailar speeds you milages is the same as my 2001. 5.
As far as the temp, this was my first diesel and it seemed to warm up slow, and cool down faster than any thing I have seen. Once I start driving it, it reaches 140 pretty quick. It will take a while for it to reach 190 though. Usually it hits 195, thermostat opens then steady at 190.

proskeeterman,

Welcome aboard. One thing you might do is get a Dodge service manual. I mean the real thing from Dodge, not some after market useless pile of paper. The manual is kind of expensive but will more than pay for itself. It would be a bargain at twice the price! If ya got any questions don't be bashful about asking.

If the truck is unloaded and it's cool or cold weather it seems to take forever to warm up. That's normal. Lots of iron and coolant. The idea is to be able to pull a grade like SR58 in CA in August with a load without heating up.

DONT REALLY KNOW WHAT ROUND TOWN MPG IS, HAVENT HAD IT LONG ENUFF. THE TRK ONLY HAS 73K ON IT, SO ITS JUST BROKEN IN, YES? ALSO IS IT NORMAL FOR THESE "BIG MOMMA'S(MY DAUGHTERS NICKNAME) TO TAKE A LONG TIME TO REACH OPERATING TEMPS? I HAVE MANY MORE 1ST OWNER ?'S, BUT FOR LATER TIMES. Wecome to the club!
You don't state which rear gear ratio you are running, but my 3500 dually with the 4:10 is averaging 14+ around town and 16+ on the road @ 64 mph. (Higher speeds= lower mpg)
Yes diesels take a little longer to warm up, remember you are only turning approx 2000rpm @ hiway speeds. Plugging in the block heater helps as does using the cold fronts, or the cardboard air deflector. BTW using all capital letters means you are shouting. Good luck!

Proskeeterman, I don't consider myself an expert on anything other than mistakes, but I'd like to be first in welcoming you to this site.

In answer to your questions, your mileage is in the ball-park. You might give some thought to increasing this by driving technique and tune-up. Being your truck is new to you, take a look at the air cleaner filter, tire pressure and front end alignment. These little things can rob you of mileage. I'll let the more experienced tell you about injectors.

As for reaching operating temperature, thermostats wear out so think about replacing that in the near future. Not knowing the history of your truck, this simple replacement will give you a base line to determine if something else is causing slow warm ups.

Fire away with the those questions. You'll find this site one of the most informative ever. Happy motoring!

Hey thnx for the reply shovelhead. i'll have to chk the rearend ratio, though i dont think its a high one. as far as the heating up, thats what i figured too, but as i said i'm new to this diesel thing and still trying to figure things out. will heed your advice on the all caps thing. never knew there was a protocol for that. thnx for advice. yeah i have noticed a extreme diff in starting the beast when shes been plugged in as apposed to not. like i said i'm learning, who says you cant teach old dogs new tricks. thnx again, i'm sure we'll talk soon.

big D; hey thnk you for your advice. i'm an old dog, but these are new tricks for me. i know air filter is ok, i chk air press in tires constantly, however i dont know bout the tune-up, whe last one was. i will chk the thermostat soon. i thought i mite be close on fuel ecom, all knowing that the faster u cruise the lower the mpg. i will be takin a trip(w/o boat, boo-hoo) soon, so i'll get an ideal on road mileage w/o out pullin something. again my thnx to u for ur advice n your right this is a great place to get the knowledge i so desperately need. thats why i joined. thnx big D tlk 2 u soon.
