just a few words on being a new owner and new member ... . just got a 98. 5 24v 3500 4x4 5 speed with the silencer ring removed, bhaf installed with a protective/anti-rubb/chaff guard on the a/c line under it, 4 inch straight pipe. . looking for any and all legit advice and comments that will help with longevity of the truck and miles of smiles for me... thanks in advance

Wellcome to the club. The #1 biggest thing you can do is moniter your fuel pressure. Your fuel injection pump (VP44) relies on excess fuel flow to cool and lubricate it. You can do searches on here to find answers to just about anything you can think up pertaining to your truck. You will find some very helpful people on this site that will be willing to help you with just about anything. Randy:)

Welcome to TDR. You didn't mention any upgrades to the fuel system so, as mentioned above, I suggest that you get a fuel pressure gauge on that truck to insure that there is sufficent pressure at the injection pump. If you are unfamiliar with the issues surrounding the OEM fuel systems on the 24-valves, do a few searches on Lift Pump Failures, VP-44 failures, or Low Fuel Pressure in the 24-Valve engine and transmission section of the forum. Plenty of ready there to fully explain the issues and the multitude of solutions developed over the years.

thanks for the warm welcomes... (if that applies to the internet. . Warm that is)... i did research the fuel pump issues a little until i got confused... are ther two different pumps or one on this truck and secondly am i understanding correctly that i can do away with this monstrosity called the vp-44 and just put a fass or airdog on it?

The VP-44 is your Bosch fuel injection pump, and no you can't do away with it unless you do a complete 12V injection pump swap, which is expensive.

The Fass and Air Dog products are replacement alternatives to your stock lift/transfer pump which is located just below your fuel filter. This is a pump that delivers fuel to the VP-44, and they have had a history of being failure prone. Thus the invention of the Fass and Air Dog type systems which have proven much more reliable. The stock lift/transfer pump can fail and the VP-44 can still suck fuel to it for a time before failure. Without a fuel pressure guage you really don't know this is occurring until it's too late. The stock Carter lift/transfer pump is ~$150, but your VP-44 is ~$1500+ to replace.

BTW, welcome.....

i see well thank you for clearing the muddy water. . so if i have researched correctly when it comes to fuel plates and cutting them ,moveing them etc . . that applies to the older first gen 12valves right?. . how about the issue of pump adjustability also 12v or both 12 and 24?

You are correct on your reading on the plates being 12 valve only. On your 24 valve, if you want a little more power, you can do it electronically. There are many aftermarket "boxes" out there that will increase the performance of your truck. Some of the available "boxes" are non-adjustable one power level, while others will let you pick and choose your power and smoke levels on the fly. I won,t recomend any one over the others, but if you have another member cloce to you , you may be able to ride with someone and try thiers out. Also you may want to go to a local truck event and see what others are using. Randy

Welcome to TDR. There's alot of info here. I, being a 12 valve owner, have a mechanical fuel system which includes a P7100 injection pump. You, on the other hand, have entered the electronic world of VP-44. Fuel pressure is key to the health of your pump. Get a gauge as soon as possible, it could save you big bucks and headaches.

LTsmoke, the 1srt gen 12 valves used a VE Pump (Mechanical Rotary Injection pump) horse power was increased by turning screws.

The 12 valves Injection pump used in the 2nd gen trucks were P7100 pumps that could have there Hores power/torque adjusted bya plate (known by many names) or turning screws.

2nd gen/3rd gen 24v trucks hp/tor is rasised by black boxes (chips) Since there injector pumps are run by the ECM (computer).

You can raise hp by putting in bigger injectors also.

Geno's Garage catalog has Fass pumps displayed in them so you can see what they look like.

thank you to everyone that gave great advice it was much appreciated. I did some more reading and other research and found a little edge ez box for 100 bucks... no rateings on torque or pony power though(figured it cant be too much though for a 100 ) now im wondering what gauges and has anyone used the short throw shifter i would appreciate some opinions on gauges, short throw shifters and the quadzilla programmers... next things im looking to do to the truck... also has anyone had problems with their tailgate not closeing

If i remember right, the E-Z is good for 60 extra horse and about 150 extra torque. I ran one for a couple years along with a set of 275 injectors. They made for a pretty good setup. I think i made 275 horse and 641 torque at the wheels with them. Randy
