New PML Rear Diff Cover

I recieved my PML rear diff cover today. I took some pics to post since my cover is totally different than what others have posted and what shows on the PML web site. I guess it's a new design and I must say I much prefer it to the style posted here previously. The rear cover now matches PML's front cover. The covers design looks to be the best compremise (spelling) between additional fluid capacity and spare tire clearance. Fits perfect, bolts all the right size and pitch. The only slight issue is the cover bolt closest to the plug for checking the fluid level interfers with the removal of the plug. It's a simple fix since the interferance is slight. I'll chuck the allen head bolt up in my buddies mill and take the head down a little. By thge way I bought it from DPC and I'm very pleased with the transaction. I ordered it on line late at night on the 22nd and it arrived today, drop shipped from PML. I'll post the pics when I get time to down load them off the camera.

Well I just went to PML's web site again. They have changed it in the last two days and it now shows the cover I was shipped. All the covers DPC sells are "as cast" since powder coating retains heat. I sure wish I would have gotten the black powder coat though, it looks way better.

Hope that works. If not go to the TDR links page under aftermarket acc and look for Diesel Performance Parts. Their price on the cover is $9 more than buying direct from PML but I'm in CA so I would have to pay tax if I bought from PML so it was cheaper this way.

The change is due to the different diff's American is useing in the Dodges. The 2003/04 trucks us a 14 bolt 10. 5 inch rear and a 14 bolt 9. 25 inch front diff. the 2004. 5's use a 14 bolt 11. 5 inch rear, in fact if the date of manufacture is close to the beginning of 2004. 5 production we suggest you call the dealer with your VIN number to make sure you actually have the 11. 5 inch rear as the 10. 5's were used in some 2004. 5 trucks till DC used up it's on hand inventory!

I am pretty sure my early '04 has a 11. 5 rear axle. I belive only the 2500 series trucks with the standard output Cummins mated to the auto transmission got the 10. 5 rear axle. All 3500's and 2500 HO's get the bigger 11. 5 axle.

The 11. 5" ring gear was available in '03, the 10. 5" was only in Cummins standard output 2500s with the auto or Hemi powered trucks. My truck is an '03. I have the 11. 5" rear. The reason PML changed the cover was they thought it was too close to the spare, the new cover is holds . 25 of a quart less but is not as close to the spare as the origional, they also wanted it to match the new cover they came out with for the front diff. I called them today.

Gino, does PML provide the torque specs on the drain, fill and check fuild bolts? I'm seriously think about getting a set for the front and rear and I would love to see those pics when you get around to it. It doesn't sound like the rear cover sticks out much further than the stock one.

I have seen a lot of different 2500 and 3500's and it seems to be a bit of "install what is sitting on the floor to make the truck go down the line" etc. That's what we always want to ask to make sure the customer gets the right cover no matter what diff the manufacturer says is there etc. By the way there is usually a sticker in the glove box that ID the diff lots of times too.

PML reccomends you follow the factorytorque specs. As an aside the ones I have installed were torqued with the 3/8th drive right hand torque method as you don't have to be nearly so accurate with a thick heavy aluminum catings as yo do with a stamped steel casting. The steel ones will gouge and tear sometimes if you go gorilla with the torque.

I have an '03 SO with an 11. 5" rear axle, all 3500s have the 11. 5" regardless of year. There is more to it than the year for the 2500s as well. Not positive but I think the 2500 4WD SOs with 5 speeds had the 11. 5" and the automatic SO 2500 4WD or 2WD had the 10. 5", the 2500 SO 2WD 5 speed had the 10. 5"

I beg to differ, my SO has the AAM 11. 5 since it is a stick shift, the automatic SO's may have had a smaller axle but both my 99 and 03 had the bigger axles with a stick shift.

Well there you go there are always exceptions to any rule a manufacturere like DC has or says they have. We have seen that oddity as well on occassion.

Sorry it has taken me so long, I just finished moving so I have been off the air for a while. They do provide torque specs, as soon as I can find which box the folder with all the papers on my truck is in I will post the torque specs. I think it was 15 pounds on the cover bolts and 25 on the fill, level, and drain plugs. I'll confirm. Your right, it really does not stick out much further than the stock cover.
