Well, looking at it I see that it is not a lot different than ours. Peak torque at somewhere around 1800-2000, ours is at 1700-1800. Peak HP at somewhere around 2800-3000, ours is at 2700. Not enough difference to talk about really, just slightly higher. It carries basically all of its torque for about 1200 rpm too, that is darn decent and maybe even a little longer than ours. I think the third gen is at least that wide though. It is one complicated sucker, but Navistar has an unbelievable amount of the 444 and 466s out there, clicking right along. I have to give them a little credit for that.



for the HO cummins, dodge claims 555 lbs/ft @ 1400 and 305 hp @ 2900 [that is printed in the ram brocure]

Well, here's the way I look at it.



D-max is an Isuzu diesel... Japanese..... with aluminum heads... ... . That right there is absolutely a No-Go in my book. Not that Isuzu makes bad engines, I am just completely uninterested in Japanese vehicles. Besides, I would never under any circumstances own anything from GM - especially a Chevy vehicle. I just do not like them.



I know the 6. 9 and pre-PowerStroke 7. 3 Ford diesels were International engines, and I had heard from a few sources that they were also actually of Japanese design and/or manufacture. I do not know who makes/designs the current PowerStroke engines though... ...



I would also rather have my Cummins powered pickup than a Ferrari. We all have our personal preferences, and thankfully, we still live in a free enough country that as long as we have the $$, we can buy whichever product we choose :D

The Cummins was made to work...

... period. PUTC did a 7% hill climb with a 12k trailer,and being almost 1000lbs. heavier it stomped the D-max,and dang near took the new 6. 0 p. s. . And did this with the smallest engine and lower r. p. m. s. I think I'll stick with"the king of GRUNT"when I get my new ride... Doug
 
I agree with the rest. Put a load on them. My dad has a 99 PSD auto and I do like the truck and it would beat my truck if mine was stock. I had always wondered how it towed, the only time I have towed with a PSD is with my 97 5spd. However, for road service work I do sometimes on weekends, I drive a F550 auto with a box on it. I do not know how much it weighs, but it can't be more than my pickup with a load of horses. It has a hard time getting out of its own way. I long for my Cummins every time I drive it. Got to take it up a hill this past weekend that I have pulled with my dodge. Loaded with 5 horses and a lot of gear, I can pull this hill at 75 no problem and probably accelerate a little too if I wanted, but this PSD(I really wish I knew what it weighed) lost speed and I even had a running start with the pedal to the floor. I lost about 5 mph on the hill. No I know my truck isn't stock, but I think I am loaded heavier. To be fair, I think the auto transmission takes too much away from the engine. I would love to pull once with a Duramax, just to see how great they are.



On a side note: I work for a general truck shop(we work on anything) on weekends doing emergency roadside service. Saturday I get a call asking if we can do any work on a Duramax. I tell him he should call monday and ask the manager. He asks if I can do anything that day. I ask why. He saws hes driving along and the engine just started spewing oil:eek: I ask if its still under warrenty. He says yeah but dealers aren't open today. I tell him I have no idea where it could be from. I had a hard time not laughing at this guy on the phone. I wanted to tell him he shoulda bought a dodge but I figured he might have been thinking that already... .
 
I was filling the truck the other day when an F-250 PSD pulled in behind me. After filling I pulled out to let him in and went in and paid. When I came out he struck up a conversation with me on fuel mileage. He was really happy with his truck, but wanted to improve fuel mileage. I told him about my experiences towing and unloaded and you could tell he would love to have my numbers. He wanted to go to a Banks kit and I told him he might want to re-think that, not because of Banks selling bad equipment, but just that the fuel mileage pickup might not be worth the cost of the investment. He's local, so I hope to run into him again to see what he ultimately did. When he heard I've got as good as 12. 3 mpg towing my 5'ver, his eyes lit up. He wouldn't tell me what his mileage was (I didn't ask), but I could tell he would love to see those numbers. He was a nice guy and it was a pleasant conversation.
 
I'm torn...

I guess I'm about the least brand loyal dude on the TDR. Try to keep the flames to minimal cause I LOVE my Cummins Ram. To me, the only real advantages the Cummins Ram has on the competition is:



1) The engine is built way heavier so,

a) it should last longer, and

b) should take more abuse.



2) It is an inline 6, therefore there should be less parts that could develop a problem (greater dependability), and if it did have some problem,



3) it would be easier to work on than a V-8.



4) It should get a skosh better fuel economy than a larger displacement V-8. But the other 2 are close enough that I wouldn't let fuel economy sway my choice.



5) Cummins has a reputation for building dependable diesel engines. A reputation means something to me, and that would/did sway my choice.





I don't see any power advantage to the Cummins (for now), because I look at them as stock trucks (even though, mine is not totally stock). I can out-tow most PSD's and DMax's out there. If I got out-pulled my pride would only hurt a little, I'd get over it.



I don't care about pulling 16k lbs. up a 7% grade for 8 - 10 miles because I only do that every other day :rolleyes: , actually I never do that. Just as long as my truck will pull my 16. 5k gcw down the road, up and over the hills satisfactorily to me. And it does.



As for 1a above, 95% of truck owners will never see the other side of 150,000 miles, so its a moot point. But as for 1b, a whole mess of TDR guys bomb their motors so that's a good thing. But out of all the Cummins owners including non-TDR guys, how many engines get bombed? Probably a pretty small percentage.



I actually think the new PSD is gonna be one hell of a truck. I think Ford has raised the bar. I'm glad for that because the next truck I'll buy should be significantly better than my current truck due to the current competition.



I don't see that the PSD or DMax has any significant power dominance over the Cummins. That's because I didn't buy my truck to go from traffic light to traffic AFAP. The only tangible advantage I can see that Ford and Chevy has over Dodge is that BIG 4 door cab they have. I'm not impressed with Dodge's "jockey cab. " My quad is effectively equivalent in my opinion.



If I were to buy now, I'd prolly get a crew cab Ford (ouch!). But I love my truck, and I'll have it for 7 more years, at least. Besides, an I-6 sounds better straight piped than a V-8, in my opinion.
