New Propane Valve

Thanks guys for the leads on the A/C shroud. I found what I needed at camping world.



Here's another question. Has anyone changed the old propane bottle valves with the new ones (must be changed by the start of next year)? I bought two new valves, and want to know the proper way to install them. Any pitfalls to avoid and/or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.

Where did you find the new valves? I have four 30# and three 20# bottles to upgrade. I have seen in the last week, two different exchange places where I can swap out the 20# bottles for $12. 50 and they come with the new OPD stuff and full of propane. Also, the Academy store in Beaumont had new 20# bottles with OPD on sale this week for $16. 99. I tried to remove the valve from an old bottle once but was never able to get it out. You would need some special thread sealing compound for the threads but other than that I don't know. bg

Just happen to come across the new valves at a new second hand store. The guy said he bought out a bunch of them and had a couple left. I paid $7. 00 for each. He had a new tank (B-B-Q size) with the new valve installed for $15. 00. I would have bought it but didn't have the cash then.

My tanks on my 5er are 7 gallons each. Hope they don't take any "special" size valves. Aren't the new valves all the same?????

I just had the new valves put on 3 of my tanks. The V-1 Propane guy had a U-shaped rig about 5" tall that fit over the whole valve from the top. The tank was buckled into a home made large "belt" vice that was made from 3" tie down turnbuckles. Wrench he used was a straight piece of 3/4" steel, stuck it through a hole in the top of the U-shaped "socket" and simply twisted the old valve out. Any good quality thread sealer will work for the new valve. His whole set-up was home made.

Total installation including the valve was $18 each.

Sounds like a plan.

For those who are still interested, I found out few more things to keep in mind:

1. the process is pretty straight forward,

2. DO NOT attempt removing the valve until you slowly, and completely, bleed off all remaining propane in the tank. Realease the pressure from the side and the top valves, and

3. like Steve said, use plenty of thread sealer on the threads before screwing it on. Oh, and check for leaks when you have the tank filled.
