new ram-my aching back-fixed!!!!!!!!

In september i posted a plea for help regarding my non-adjustable lumbar seat killing my back. i found that the lumbar bulge hit me right in the butt and then it caved in with no support for my lumbar of my back. for a while, i thought i was going to have to install a honda seat in my new ram. resolution was using contact cement and 1" thick firm foam, one piece 12" wide adhered from my shoulder height down to my waistline with edges cut at a 60 degree angle so that the glue would hold the edges flat. then i took another piece 12" wide and 8 inches tall overlapping the top added foam by about an inch. it feels great, send me an email and i'll send you pictures and answer questions, this modification if worth it. john skalet

Did you do this under the seat cover? How hard was it to remove?



I'm interested, and have thought about doing this myself. Just wondering if the headache of doing it would be worse than the occasional backache?

one additional comment and that is that i also added about an inch of foam right at the bottom were by little butt got wedged in between the seatback and the seat bottom. that feels much better too. john skalet

the vertical side bolsters were added to the sides to hold the driver in place so that he doesn't get thrown around as much like when you hit a driveway apron but they are not necessary and for a larger guy would probably be annoying. john

I know a guy who actually traded his CTD for a PSD because he couldn't get the seat to fit his back!!!

cummins for a power stroke

geez, that is a tragedy, i found the power stroke seat just as bad for me. especially if you're fifth wheeling, the seat must feel right. john skalet

Actually the POWER vertical side bolsters are extremely comfortable both for me and for my 350 pound 6-5 friend with whom I share the driving on Daytona trips. I can adjust them in to keep my skinny but snug and he can adjust them out to keep from pinching him. As for their value in everyday driving, they relax a whole bunch of muscles that you use to maintain your upright position while the car or truck constantly reacts to road and driving conditions. On a long trip, they can make you feel a lot less sore at the end, and for more rewady to get in some serious Harley-riding time! Their origin was in the Sports cars of the thirties, where they allowed the driver to expend his energy and concentration on handling rather than keeping himself upright in his seat. I find diving the Duramax FAR more relaxing than driving either of my Dodges or even my Tundra, PRIMARILY because of the seat. On the other hand, I'm not holding my breath awaiting the opportunity for a cheap set of top-of-the-line Duramx leather power seats to become available!!!

As Boonsur originally asked, how hard was it to R & R the upholstery? I'm 5'-8" and I find the lumbar support hits me too high and need something at the bottom of the backrest to fill some of the gap, too. I'd like to add some padding under the cover.

lower lumbar support

jgk, it is very easy to raise the back cover up high enough to do your work. there is a ziplock type seam that you just pullapart at the bottom of the seatback, when you lift it up in the front you will see that you need to cut 1" top foam (get at upholstery shop) to fill up where it is deficient. use contact cement on both surfaces and push tight into shape. put cover back on. john skalet
