We might notice a pattern here. The folks saying their trucks squeak on every shutdown tend to have automatics, the ones who squeak only occasionally have sticks. The heavy flywheel on the manual trucks don't stop as fast as the light flex plates on the automatics, hence less squeak! Mine has done it from day one probably every shutdown. The only exception was after my puke bottle overflowed following steep off road descents (twice). Then the belt was well lubed and didn't squeak! A good gunking of the front of the engine and the squeak was back.

When asked ,cummins told me on the autos if it stops squeaking it is time to replace the belt. I thought that was

a nice feature, and if I wanted to change it a gatorback would be in order.

Mine does it EVERY time from day ONE with OEM belt and GATES HP belt. I use PROLONG engine treatment and am @ 94K miles and the day it QUITS squeaking, I'll start worrying. It has done it with the bottle in the stock location and with it relocated below. NO difference. The stops so abruptly at near 18:1 compression ratio that the momentum in the rest of the spinning accessories, AC, WP, ALT (that can generate close to 140 amps) cannot stop as quickly, briefly screeching the belt across the pulley, thus the chirp on shutdown. I love it. I have a 2000 AUTO and I think the comment about the manual vs AUTO had a good observation about the added mass of the flywheel VS the flex plate. I think it may cause the assy to turn slightly more and either reduce or sometimes eliminate the squeak. Bottom line, it's not hurting a thing, part of living with a Cummins:D

BTW Ya gotta LOVE spell check. .

Belt squeak

My truck has done this since day one, even after removing the blow-by bottle and extending the drain hose down to the front stabilizer. I did this shortly after taking delivery of the truck.

My previous truck did the same thing and it was a five speed.

Mine squeaks only about 50% of the time. Its an auto and I haven't moved the breather bottle. There goes the auto squeaking every time theory... ...

Mine does it about 20% of the time, even though my breather bottle was removed.

I like the personality thing.

I like to feel her shake at shut-down, and I welcome the squeeks. Hmmm. :D:rolleyes: Oo.

We've got four trucks at work. The two autos do it, the two manuals don't. Mine's a manual and I have never heard it happen even once.

I would tend to agree with KKaiser in thinking that the autos would do it more readily than the manuals due to the weight of the flywheel. I would imagine, however, that there are a lot of other characteristics that would come in to play such as oil deposits, loose tensioners, worn belts, etc. . etc... In any case, there are a number of good thoughts in this thread that had never occured to me before. Gotta LOVE this TDR site!:D :D :D

I absolutely love that sound during shutdown :D lets others know you have arrived in style. :) I have yet to hear the competition make such an announcement upon arrival. My truck only does this when it has been running for 10-15 minutes or when it is hot outside (above 80F). Sometimes the chirp is really wimpy and embarrassing coming from that ISB but there are times when I get shivers down my spine

Heat in the motor seems to be the key. Mine NEVER squeaks when I move it around in the yard. 1 to 2 minute runs. Have to agree about the 5-10 minute squeak free time after start up. Pistons and cylinders have not swelled to operating tolerances, which dramatically effects compression, aka stop NOW. Also the belt may squeak with or without a certain amount of heat? Lets check run times and outside air temps and figure out whats what. BTW I had a squealing idler pulley bearing at about 60K. Could not get it to do it for the dealer so bought my own. Replaced it and the belt, again, love the Gates belts, squeaked first time I ran it for 15+ minutes and hasn't quit, ALMOST all of the time!

Belt sqeek

:D My 2001 has chirped every time ive have shut it down, Ive wrote it off to the engine sudden stop, and the engine fan clutch, Ive been under the hood and let wife start and kill the engine and it seem's to me the fan pulley is the chirper, what the heck let's me know that the fan clutch is working and the engine still has good comp. Harv:rolleyes:

My wife didn't like the squeak. I ordered a Goodyear Gatorback belt from Summit Racing. No more squeak. With freight was $33. No one in town carried the belt and they would have to order it for me.

Now I wonder what is next that she will not like. She loves leather, and handcuffs... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .
