Strange Clanking Noise??

Couldn't stand the sight of my stock tires anymore, so I took it in to the tire dealer, looked at a few different sizes and styles and decided that the Cooper Discoverer S/T 35X12. 50X17 tires looked the best (for my taste). Filled up the wheel wells just perfect. I do experience a small amount of rub on the upper control arms at full look steering, but not bad. Drives down the highway just fine. (Had it up to 95 mph) More pics in gallery if interested. Oh, and this is with completely stock suspension.

Very nice. If you don't mind me asking how much did they set you back. I'm going to need new tires soon and these Coopers look really nice.

I'm also running Coop Discoverer STs for the winter on a dually. They are a little noisier than the OEM Goodyear GS-As. But they are in no wise obnoxiously noisy for such an aggressive tread. I'm pleased. :)

Thanks for the replies. Just got back in from taking some better pics of it. Just got done resizing them and re-doing my gallery.

They cost me $640 mounted and balance trading my stock tires in. I think they were right around $850 mounted and balanced without trade (Set of four).

The gizmo on the side is a decal. I know a guy that works for a body shop, and had ordered this one in for someone that never picked it up, so he sold it to me for $125 installed.

The tires are a little louder than stock, but not nearly as loud as they look. I can still hear the engine over the tires at 75 mph.

Here's a better pic too...

NLamke... .

I have the Mastercraft "cousin" tires of the Cooper on my truck. I have the LT33x12. 50R17 Mastercraft Courser C/T's... ..... I've been very pleased with mine... they're nice and smooth, although a bit on the noisey side. I did some trading around (sold my stock alloys with 21k miles on BFG Rugged Trails, purchased some '05 Chromed Forged Alloys w/Michelins, sold the Michelins, installed Mastercrafts) and came out pretty good on the overall deal. I got tired of waiting on Bridgestone to get their head out of their butt and crank out some "D" or "E" Dueler A/T REVO's. Knowing what I know now, I'd chosen the Mastercrafts anyway.

It's funny you should reply. When I was looking for tires, I did a search, and actually came across your link... at two different sites even. Mastercrafts in that size are in short supply around here, everyone was at least a month out on getting them. The place I got these actually had them in the 33X12. 50, which was what I was planning on getting after seeing them on your truck, but when I got to the store, and looked at them all side by side, (about 5 different sizes and styles) I picked two of them, the Discoverer STT 285/70 and the Discoverer S/T 35X12. 50 and he threw each on one side of the truck so I could see them on the truck and make my decision. One look at the 35's and I was in love :D I got more compliments on my truck in the last 24 hours than I've gotten in two months with stock tires.

Discoverer STs are Es. :)

Actually the 35X12. 50's are only D rated. The biggest size you can get in this particular tire for a 17 inch rim while maintaining the E rating is a 265/70/17. This really won't effect me as I don't do any heavy hauling. Another thing with the bigger tires, I'm only spinning 1900 RPM at 75 MPH now. Mileage has dropped from 18. 5 mpg to about 17 mpg however.

Milage with 35"

In order to get the better milage with the 35" (20-22mpg) I think the newer CTDs need an rpm range of 2000-2200rpm. I have been saying that the best choice for the new CTDs is 4. 10 gears.

My truck at www.GoRowan.com/2004ram Oo.

The best mileage will occur when the engine is kept in the highest torque range with the lowest rpm. Which is not 2-2200 rpm. The best milage will be had with 3. 07 gears. With a little help from a fueling aid and having to start out in first gear instead of 2nd is the only draw backs. Autos will have to change to a lower stall torque converter. Expect 23-25 mpg!

NLamke I like your setup. Looks good.

I just put a set of '03 alloys on my '96 with the stock BFGs which have about 40% tread. I'll be looking for another tire once these are worn out.

I would prefer a 33" though like gsbrockman, that way it's not a lot taller than stock and hopefully won't affect mileage much.

gsbrockman what did you pay for your tires and what is the weight rating and range on them? I never heard of Mastercraft and I think your setup looks great too.

Thanks for the compliment Vaughn. I had the 33X12. 50 next to a stock tire, and they are very close in size. The 33 was a little taller, maybe an inch and a little wider, two inches maybe. I was originally looking at the Mastercraft C/T, but availability for them here is very limited, and they are pretty close to identical to the Discoverer S/T. I believe the Mastercraft and the Discoverer tires in 33 and 35 sizes are all D rated. Internet pricing on the Mastercrafts is around $140-$150/tire and locally were $170 mounted and balanced in the 33's. The best thing about going local is the guy put two different tires on the front (one on each side) and let me look at each and decide which one I liked.

I give the coopers a thumbs up. I however went with the 265 to keep the e rating. the 33 tires are d rated but they are very low pounds for a d tire, something like 2600. the 35 is rated @3000. I cannot be sure the numbers are right but close,as I checked last week. not much noise, more so out the tail pipe
