The local Dodge dealer replaced the sending unit on my 96 dually. Now the fuel gauge is active whether the key is in the switch or not. The dealer assured me it was installed and operated properly. I am not ready to buy into that story. The original let the fuel gauge go to E when the truck was turned off. Any feedback appreciated.

My truck is identical to yours except it's a 2500. My fuel gauge never goes to empty with the ignition off. It always stays wherever it was when the engine was running. It's been that way since new. I never replaced the sender.

Had mine replaced by the dealer about 18 months ago, before the dealer replaced it it went to E when the engine was in off. Now, seems to stay about where it was before the engine was off (not returning to E). Not had any problems, though.

RT_Craig,

Mine has been sitting on empty so long (quit workingt) I can't remeber if it stayed in position when the key was turned off.

Check to see if the wire for sender is hot all the time. I need to check owners/sevice manual for correct operation.

I was checking connector(to fuel tank module/fue pump module) in manual it seems to me there was two hot wires one for fuel pump (gas engines, diesels use same connector) and one for sending unit(sensor). If the fuel sending unit is being treated as sensor then should only work when PCM is lighted up when ignition is turned on.

Will look at wiring diagrams also to see what is going on with electrical.
