Finally broke down and bought some new tires and wheels - driving in the rain with my rear slicks got a little scary recently,
and I had a couple bent wheels.
In the end, I coughed up the difference and stuck with the Michelins. I was still running two of the tires that were on the truck when I bought it 36k miles ago. At the time they had about the same tread remaining as the two I bought about 25k miles ago, so if I can get 60k miles out of this set I'll be more than happy.
Trying to find inexpensive wheels that have a high enough load rating is impossible - none of the chrome steel wheels were rated at more than 2200 pounds. Ended up with MB Motoring 16x7 "Outlaw II" style wheels, which are rated at 3100 pounds - a hair over the stock wheel's rating. Only other issue was the slight difference in backspacing caused a little contact between the front fender opening and the tire, but that was easily "fixed" with a cutoff wheel - just needed to trim the ends off the factory flares.
If I'm walking a little funny it's because everything came to $1248 out the door.
Good thing Discount has a 12-month no interest deal going right now... .
