A friend of mine just called me and he is stranded at a gas station because his truck won't start. He bought a smarty today, put it on his truck, drove a half mile and pulled into a station to get something to drink, came back out side and truck would not start. The truck is a 2001 5 spd 2500 2wd. cleaned and tightened all battery connections, left batteries unhooked for 30 minutes or so. He says when you bump the key when the lift pump would normally run for 30 seconds or so it is now just a quick blip. He says it will not turn over or anything. Sounds to me like a dead ECM. If the ecm was weak(if thats even possible), could reflashing it with the smarty have killed it?

As soon as I finished this post my friend calls me back and tells me that the ignition wire had come apart where it had been spliced back together after an alarm system had been removed.

Jumped the gun a bit, did we not? I went thru the "Smarty Killed My Truck" blues for about 10 minutes the day I bought it. Nothing worse than being in a rest stop, programming your truck, than when you come back out of the rest area, your truck won't start. Fix was easy, just reload it.

I had that problem and it was the dealer device he wired in series from the ignition switch to the clutch pedal switch. You know the one were it disables the truck after about 30 seconds after the key fob unlock button is pushed. Me I figured the starter and replaced the plunger and contacts from Larry B's. I had nto bought the Smarty yet waiting for the new and improved version.

One thing is for sure about the Smarty. It communicates very well with the ecm. Thats one of its strongest assets.
