New Snapper!

I'm just a stroke of the pen away from buying a new Snapper! After searching the web for all the "discount internet mail order sites" and suffering mildly from sticker shock at the price of a good lawnmower, I've come to the conclusion that Walmart's price of $399 for a new 21" self propelled Snapper with all six accesories for side discharge, mulching, and bagging including their patented Ninja mulching blade, can't be beat. The local Snapper dealer wants $420 just for the mower (same B&S motor) and then you pick your accessories. The bag is $100 and the side discharge attachment is $25 etc... I opted for the free brochure and slithered out the door. Prices elsewhere are comparable to his. So if Snapper is thumbs up, Walmart gets the bucks. Our little Murray mulcher just doesn't do a very good job and never has.

Anyone own a Snapper and if so are you happy with it? $400 worth of blissful happiness?

Mowers are different when comparing them to an authorized dealer vs. a Wal-Mart, Home Depot etc. The mowers may look the same but are not built with the same quality.

Don't know anything about Snapper, but I strongly recommend Honda lawnmowers. You would think that Honda lawnmowers were standard issue in my neighborhood. Four houses in a row and all have Honda lawnmowers. Based on my experience (five Honda mowers in my family) I recommend them. They are expensive, but they are excellent pieces of equipment and will last forever. After you use it awhile you will forget about the cost. Seems like a lot of the lawn maintenance guys in this area use Toro.

How right you are. The Snapper at Walmart has a 6hp Briggs and Stratton while the dealer's has a 6. 75hp Briggs and Stratton or an optional Kawasaki "Robin" engine for commercial users. I mostly want that benifits of the Snapper deck verses the flat deck on our Murray. I've always had good service from Briggs and Stratton. I've looked for an old used Snapper deck to mount our new 4hp Briggs to but came up empty. I'll put the pen away and crack out the magnifying glass for further study.

Our local Home Depot carries Honda and Toro mowers. I wonder how they compare to the dealer's models? I might go back and check them out some more.

Honda

Ditto CROW, they are just like our Cummins engine, built tough. They are not cheap like you say but I have had meny brands over the years and none could stand up to the Honda, just too bad that its not American made.

I have a LawnBoy with Honda engine, about the same price you're talking about from Costco. Works great.

We have a 6 hp Honda commercial walk behind mower at work and the only problem is it won't discharge tall grass. It is rear discharge. Other than that it is 1 tuff mower. Will probably last for 18 years 3 months and a couple of days.

Bill, the ol' lady decided if I bought her a push reel mower I could forget about the Snapper!

That would have been mostly for a novelty but the poor performance of the Murray is what started the interest in the first place.

Had two.

I have had two, or should I say still have two. My first I bought in 1985 and has performed flawlessly. Even when my boy decided to run over a hunk of metal 2x6 4" long, it survived. Excellent cleaning feature, they really suck up leaves, twigs, and dog poop. My first one had a bad sprage clutch and I retired it just this year and bought a new one, it is sweet. If anyone wants a used one that just needs a new flywheel, sprage clutch, holler. Can't go wrong with a Snapper.

Mine's a Deere

Self propelled, aluminum deck with a six horse Kawasaki. I would never have bought one because their over my budget. Lucked out and got it free through a work incentive. Should hold up to even commercial work.

I had Snapper, and a Honda. The Honda is a much better lawnmower. Read Cunsumer Reports.

If it don't have a Briggs & Scrap iron engine. Its to quiet.

That and you can straight pipe a B&S engine with a piece of rigid conduit!

Steve, Ck the type of Briggs that Wally World is selling on the Snapper. Make sure it is atleast an "IC" model. They have a steel sleeve on the cyl and a ball bearing on the flywheel. The Cheapo Briggs have no bearings or sleeved bore.

I bought a John Dere self propelled 10 years ago. Has been a good unit. It has a 4. 5hp Kawasaki OHV with full pressure lubrication. It has a spin on oil filter also. Chris

Spent the day studying all the offerings. We came home with a

MRP216017BV Snapper from Wallmart. It turns out the $420 no accessories Snapper from the authorized dealer has the same motor as the one from Wallyworld. It's not an IC but a 6hp Quantum B&S. For residential use the warranty is the same two years for both motors.

We just mowed the grass with it and it does a great job! No stray hairs sticking up all over the yard like the little Murray left behind. For the price I think it'll do us well. We have the bag, side discharge chute and mulching plug for less than the dealer wanted for the mower alone.

It's kinda humorous watching the Mrs flip down the go handle, pop a little wheelie and then chase the mower across the yard!:-laf

I guess I could slow it down a notch for her!
