Hello to All

Heres the deal I had a bad injector in my 2004 dodge 305/555 took it back to the dealer to have them find out what was wrong #3 was knocking so they put 6 new ones in before the truck would not smoke ran great and was running just fine getting great fuel mileage, now its smokes all the time black/gray smoke its the fuel I make if it was running diesel it would smoke so bad you could not see the trucks behind you. the mileage is down on it also I will check it again but I think its getting around 11 to 12 mpg was getting 14 to 16

The person said that he change nothing in the computer when they did the work it does not have the bottom end it used to have and it seems slugish lots of turbo lag, its making 21+ lbs of boost once it starts building.

Could they have done some thing wrong when they put the new injectors in?

the truck has 80,000 miles on it and it was a great truck till this happend any ideas??

just looking for the cause

thanks

Better have them check the part number on the injectors they installed. 03-04 305hp trucks took an 8 hole injector and the later 04. 5-up 325hp took a 5 hole injector. I'd bet my paycheck they put the wrong stix in there  I've seen it happen before and it created the same symptoms you describe. Do you have a copy of the work order? get the part number and post it up here and we can check it.

Dave

They put the wrong injectors in your truck

you should have gotten # R8004082AA injectors. up to 12/31/03 mfg date gets R8004082AA injector, after 12/31/03 gets R5135790AD injector... ... . your truck was built 11/04/03. you need to go back to dealer and have them fix your truck.

good luck,

Dave

THANK YOU DAVE

this makes me happy to find out they did some thing wrong

tdr is the best site out there

again thank you

I really feel for you. You may want to consider new hi-po injectors. Best mod I did to my truck. Its not free, like you are getting with the dealer, but the truck power went up considerably and the economy actually increased. Cost was $1200 installed, however.

Hi-Po????? Haven't heard of them.

CJ: Any thoughts as to whether or not your alternative fuels had anything to do with your original injector problem?

Hello Tinman

The injector was hurt by lack of fuel I pluged a filter going down the road at a high rate of speed (Montana we Speed for Hrs at a time 2 HRS AT 95 TO 100)so in a round about way yes but if I was doing the same with diesel the out come would be the same.

I did it in May of this year the only time you herd it was at low speed idle in gear backing up was the worse. thought I would try putting diesel in it to see if it was just dirty I was wrong and it got really loud so I had them changed.

I feel the extra lube in the fuel I make saved the engine not hurt it I have run the truck with a bad lift pump 3 times no IP problems as of today.

the mec that did the work was and still is a fan of stock trucks running diesel fuel but after he worked on mine he has changed his view on what i am doing if you want to see pictures of the injectors they took out they are posted on the thread https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/alternative-fuels/143059-dse-truck-04-05-ctd-34.htmlits a sticky post so it right on top and has had 61,000 +views

hope this helps

off to the dealer

thanks for all the help

dealership

hello to all

They are not sure of why it happened but it did and now its sitting in my driveway and I have a rental truck 1/2 ton dodge crew cab gasser. #@$%!

I would like to thank DBraunig for taking the time to help me on this last night

I would have driven the truck to Bozeman on Saturday and I dont think it would do my engine any good. THANKS AGAIN DAVE.

Now on to the bigger question I put about 500 miles on the truck in the last week how much damage to the engine its over fueling bad black smoke, down on power.

My thought is to do an oil change send a sample to to see if any fuel is in the oil

Any other thoughts on this.

thanks for you time

I would like to know how and where you got injectors for $1200 installed? I've seen them on various advertiser websites and they are all in the $4K - $5K range. I'm going to need to have some injector work done to mine very soon adn I can live with $1200. Thanks.

They come from Timberline Dodge in Portland and they are just modified tips.

If they are that price they kept the originals out of the truck. So all you are getting is nozzles. I do know a guy that made 683HP on those nozzles.

The guy that does the work on them is in Scappoose Oregon at a shop called DFI.

I think I may need more than just tips. I have one that is sticking closed when cold and getting fairly regular these days. It also seems to not run as smoothly as it used to when up to temp.

I would recommend sending them to either DDP or F1 Diesel to have them tested then and just replace the one that's bad.

F1 all the way, I have a set of thier 2. 5 flux sticks and love it. even with just a boost fooler and the stock program the truck drive great and has very little smoke when you get on it.

After the correct stix are installed, have them do a cylinder contribution test and let you see the results. Also, you can have them "kill" each cylinder one at a time. The difference each cylinder makes in the engine as it is killed should remain fairly constant across all six. Both these procedures should take all of five minutes to do while you watch. Contribution should be evenly matched across all six, 97-100+% seems normal on a healthy engine with new injectors.

If you feel like pushing the issue a little, have them run a boroscope through each cylinder as the injectors are swapped, this will give you a birdseye view of each piston top. Snapon has a cool new boroscope with a video screen on it, I just got a new one about two weeks ago ($399) I think. A compression test is another option. I think that's about the limit without pulling the head to have a look at the pistons. The boroscope will be the quickest way to determine if a piston has melted. The Cummins can take a pretty good beating though. If it runs right after the stix are changed and contribution is normal, I wouldn't worry much about it. Two other trucks I know of had this happen with no ill effects on the engine, but neither trucks were returned to the owner for 500 miles either  The truck should have never left the shop that way.

Hello Dave

I had them do a Cylinder Contribution test, The engine is running great just like it use to

#1 at 99

#2 at 101

#3 at 99

#4 at 100

#5 at 99

#6 at 101

#3 was the one that went bad so now it looks good. I would think by these numbers it should be ok .

They also did a kill test and it did not seem to make the engine run much different only sounds funny running on five.

Thanks again for your help.

I will post the oil test when I get it back

You would think the dealer would look at the engine serial number before going to order stix. Glad everything worked out!!!!!!!!!
