Has anyone seen this new TDi from VW?



Operating principle: V-10 Twin-turbo direct-injection diesel with two charge-air intercoolers



Displacement: 5000cc



Power Output: 230kW @ 4000rpm



Torque: 750Nm @ 2000rpm



Fuel Injection: Pump Injection





Man!!! What do those numbers compute to for us other English folks?. ?. ? Either way, it sounds like its powerful! Is it?. ?. ?

All the reviews I've seen say the V-10 TDI is THE engine to get in the Touareg. Too bad it isn't sold here... yet.

If it were up to me, I'd get a Touareg as our next vehicle but the other half has her heart set on a Volvo sedan so...



Either way, thanks LSmith for the conversion chart! I just wish things were more like jolly ole England (and most of Europe) around here when it comes to new vehicles and new technologies (like diesel!)

The Touareg is U G L Y!!!

The engine is made of recycled beer cans. ( The WHOLE engine )

The automatic transmission is great.

My understanding is that it is not a pump-nozzle setup for the injection - rather it is HEUI and uses pricey injectors and common rail stuff, etc..... just like the 150hp version of the 1. 9L dubbed the "pompe deusse" (sp?).



They allegedly haven't brought either of these engines over here due to our higher sulphur content in the #2.

According to Petersons the TDI will be available in the US in early 2004, though probably in limited quantities. Apparently the engine is so popular in Europe that they can't produce it fast enough.

The latest news says the V10 TDI will be available SUMMER of 2004, probably as an '05 model. Folks, current Touareg pricing is about $36 for the 6cyl, and $42 for the 8cyl. Expect this V10 to command prices around $50k. Also, if you walk in a VW dealer assuming it's like dodge, and start talking invoice prices, they will turn you around just as quickly and send you out the door.

The engine is simply two of their 2. 5 TDI's that they use in European Audi's etc, piggybacked for lack of better term. I believe it gets 25mpg or so. This V10 touareg has been out in Europe, by the way, since the introduction of the touareg a year or so ago.



Folks, you will find this site VERY helpful. It has conversions for everything, from cooking measurements, to weather, metric/standard, and automotive. I use the Torque/NM converter all the time. Actually there is a whole auto section if you dig around. Cool site!

I can't wait to see a Toureg with the TDI..... that's going to be a REALLY sweet ride.



On edit: IMHO - the 'low sulfur' #2 issue in Europe smells fishy... . when I was in Ireland back in January... . I only saw one place that had the 'low sulfur' #2. I asked about it and folks with the 150hp 1. 9L TDI fill up with whatever is available... ...



I feel that the non-availability (is that a word?) of the HEUI TDI's is not because of the fuel - it's political/environmental red tape/BS keeping them out of the states.



The powers that be must be thinking this: Why have fuel efficient cars running around when you can have gassers guzzling a more expensive to produce/distribute fuel that generates more tax revenue from increased consumption and production costs??!!

Yeh, I hear you. That is probably EXACTLY what they're saying. Did anyone else notice that when gas prices were hiked up for Labor Day that diesel was the lowest by about a dime?. ?. ? Well, at least it was here in ABQ! Man, I saw that and filled it up anyway. Now prices have leveled back out and it is comparable to regular unleaded in price. Oh well, it was good while it lasted! Stick it to the gassers!!! Make them :{ !!!
