New ticking noise

In the last couple of days, I've noticed a ticking noise at idle. It's only noticable standing next to the front wheels. I broke out a 'mechanics stethoscope', and it appears to be coming from what I think is the lift pump( area directly behind the primer pump). Is this a normal failure mode for the lift pump? I've noticed no change in preformance or driveability, just this irratating 'tick,tick,tick'. My Cummins is still under warrenty, if it is the lift pump, is it covered under the 5yr/100,000?

My truck had a tick in it after a 900 mi trip so I stopped in at my Cummins dealer he said it was a lifter( it seemed to be coming from about the same area your desribing) I adjusted the lifters and that cured the problem. Cummins wanted $175 for the job.

Thanks guys! I'll adjust the valves and see.

I only have about 15000 since I last adjusted the valves, but it can't hurt to check that first. It sure does sound like it's coming from the lift pump, but I'll adjust the valves and see what happens.



I wish I could come over to Rob's this weekend, but there is a BIG Mule buck with my name on it. And I have a craving for some 'backstrap'.

A bad overflow valve could be the culprit.

This can or cannot be normal. If your fuel psi is ok, then cool. However, most lift pumps don't tick perceptibaly, unless they are tired and or the overflow valve is set up to greater than stock psi's.



Yes it is covered by the 5/100 at Dodge not Cummins. Maybe they will sublet it to a Cummins dist. if you insist. Good news is that the lift pump and gaskets are less than 150, so maybe change it yourself.
