Okay, I think I've done my research on this, but I want to run it by everyone first. Basically, I want to put larger tires on my mostly stock 2500 4x4.

Here are the facts, as I understand them:

- wheels are 8 on 6. 5 bolt pattern, 16"x6. 5"

- stock tires are 265/75-16 (31. 65"x10. 43")

For my new tires, I wanted:

- spare to fit under bed

- not rub

- not need a lift

- look cool :D

From the other threads, it seems that the two winners are:

- 255/85-16 (33. 07"x10. 04") - tallest

- 285/75-16 (32. 83"x11. 22") - widest

If I forget about the spare fitting (and keep a stock tire to swap onto a front position in case of a problem), then the absolute biggest I can fit without a lift is:

- 295/75-16 (33. 42"x11. 61")

I think the "Goodyear Wrangler MT/R 285/75-16" look the best. And the only 295/75-16 I could find was the "BFG All-Terrain T/A KO 295/75-16", which I thought didn't look so great.

So, does this all check out? Could I potentially put any of those three sizes on the stock rims?

And what kind of thread depth should I wait for before ditching my aging stock tires? :p

I have 315's BFG's on my stock not lifted 2500,no rubbing ,I only put the 2" coils on to level the truck, but you don't have to do it,and yes their on the stock rims. I got over 40,000 miles on the first set of 315's. Hope that helps. I don't think anything bigger than a 265 will fit under the bed.

The stock tires on the diesels with 6. 5" wheels in 1999 were LT245/75/16 or LT215/85/16. IMHO, 265s are a stretch on those wheels, although I have seen it done. I believe later trucks have wider wheels, either 7. 5" or 8"

I think the wheel size depends on if you got the steel el-cheapos like me or the optional wheels. One thing to think about is the ratio change. I changed from 245/75 to 235/85 and found that it really changed the launch "feel". I now start in 1st most of the time because of this change. It is only about a 5% change, but that is the difference in a 3. 55 and a 3. 73 rear end. A 4. 10 would be no problem with the huge tires, but I think you will really notice the launch change and it will amplify the 3rd to 4th gear "jump". I looked at changing my rations and found the EZ was the cheapest ratio change on the market. It helps some on the launch, but man did it close the gap on the 3 to 4 change with a load.

285/75/16's work great, and look great. They fit in spare tire well too (barely). There is no compromise to the BFG All-Terrains. IMHO they have the best traction combined with the best durability. I bought Pathfinders this go-around. They are just O. K. but I wish I would have spent the extra bucks for the BFG's.

I have seen 315's on the stock wheels. They look pretty good. They are kind of balooned out on the side walls but not bad. The guy said they would rub a little when the wheel was turned to the lock.

I have a friend who has 285/75/16's on custom wheels. They rub a little when turned all the way becuase of the stupid offset they put in the aftermarket wheels.

I am a new member and am going to buy some new tires and need some advice. I have a 2001 with a 410 and would like to buy the 235/85 tires to help the mileage and lower the RPM.

I have a fifth wheel that only weighs 6,000 that i haven't towed yet. Does anyone have this setup and does it do what i think it will. I get about 17MPG now.

I usually go to a Les Schwab If I need answers. And don't forget your mud flaps if you don't have any. . the measurement is 20 inches from the bottom of the fender to the street - most big trucks are usually 26-29 inches stock and the ticket isn't worth it (although it is just a fix it anyway) :)
