New tires!

I bought my 2500 with the 4. 10 axle ratio because I new I'd want to switch to a larger tire size. After months of reseach I think I found the perfect tires for my application: 295/70R-17 Nitto Grappler all terrains. They are noticeably larger than the BF Goodrich 285's and the tread is quieter. They have a load rating of 3415# @ 65psi so they give me 440# more capacity per axle and a better ride. After having the computer reset for 624 rev's per mile, the speedo is dead accurate and I picked up almost 2 mpg on the highway with the lower engine rpm.



They look great on the truck and don't rub like 315's. If someone can help me figure it out, I'll download some pic's of them on my truck.

Been doing a little research on this myself and I wouldn't say they are noticeably taller (BFG=32. 8"\Nitto=33. 19"). But I do like the fact they are cheaper, my only hangup is could I still use one of my 285's as a spare? Does anybody know?

Are Nittos good tires?



Silverram, you don't have to use the spare very often. Just don't go too fast on your way to the tire shop. My spare on my 12+ year old F250 never touched the ground.

They run $183 through Discount Tires. The difference in height isn't much, but looking at the new Power Wagon with 285's and the same size wheels, they are wider, especially at the tread.

The Nitto's are nice looking tires. The only problem with them is that they have 2 ply sidewalls where the BFG's have 3 if you intend to go offroad in any areas where there may be sharp rocks.



How well did they balance and how much different do they ride then stock?

If you know how to resize an image you can add them to your readers rigs gallery or go to a photo hosting site like Shutterfly.com for example (easier in my opinion) and post a URL link in your message.

I agree with your criticism of the sidewalls - the sides of my stock "Rugged Trails" were cut up bad from a trip over Engineer Pass in Colorado last June, but they do have the bead saver lip like the BFG's. Two ply side wall should ride better. They seem to dampen the shock of bumps better than the stock tires. They balanced well with the worst one taking only 3 ounces to balance. They are quieter than BFG AT's.

With the limited slip in my '97, I couldn't use two different sized tires because of the clutches in the dif. It's my understanding in the new limited slip have no clutches so is running two different size tires ok, say for a hunderd miles or so?

Just an aside... Nitto's website says 3195# @ 65 PSI for these tires. Same as the stock michelins but a D rating instead of E.

dhill, I guess to be safe you could put the spare on the front since even with 4wd in 2H, there is no load on the open diff. PK said he already had 285's so the difference in size isn't very much.

XJSuperman - The tire sidewall says 3415# for a single application. All the specs match the 295/70R-16 size. I double checked when the tires came in because I needed all the help I could get with my camper.

I'm curious to see how they run after they get a good number of miles on them. Thes stock michelins are ok on the road and in the rain BUT suck big time in anything else (granted they are just a street tire).



I still looking forward to the tire gods coming out with e-rated tires for the 17" rims in bigger than what we have now... should be just a matter of time before they all make them.



Again keep us up to date on how the nitto's do. I love the look of them on the truck.

I emailed Michelin to see if they had plans of producing the LTX MS in E load and their reply was "NO, we do not plan on making a 17" E-load LTX MS we already have a 17" E-load tire in the LTX AS series. "



The fact that Michelin and BF Goodrich are one company now means less choices for the consumer.
