I know there are a million fuel pressure gauge questions on here but I'm a little confused after researching the old threads. I have a a 12 valve but I introduced two friends at work to the world of the dodge diesel and this site. One truck is a 2002 non HO with 120,000 miles bought off his brother-in-law who had the injector pump go out once when it was new and no problems ever since. It seems to have a fuel pump in the tank. (you can hear it when you turn the key on). The other truck is an 01 HO. It has had several lift pump and injector pumps replaced by previous owner. The other day doing 70mph it started to cut out, changed the filter and now it runs good. So we're a little worried about having low fuel pressure now.

My question is:

1) Can we just run a gauge off the banjo fitting? If so will we need a snubber to reduce pulsation for a mechanical gauge?

2) If it's got an electric pump will it pulsate like a mechanical pump?

3) does it matter if we use an electric sending unit or mechanical?

4) any difference in installing a gauge on these trucks since one is mechanical pump HO and the other is electric pump non HO?

We just want to keep it simple, no mods later down the road, no need for a control box just want simplest fuel pressure gauge. Was looking at the ones in geno's catalog but they didn't say anything about pulsation. Thanks for the help We appreciate it. This site has literally saved me thousands of dollars and given me enough knowledge to make my truck last for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Give Eric a call at Vulcan Performance Products. He'll fix you up with exactly what you need:

Vulcan Performance Home Page

Most of us are putting a needle valve (snubber) inline to the gauge.

You can also contact Richard at Glacier Diesel Power: Glacier Diesel Power

Both of these guys are first class. Just tell them what you're doing.

Whatever you do don't run without a fuel pressure gauge in a 2nd gen engine. It's not an option... it's an absolute "must have"!!!

Learn from my mistake... . I didn't listen to these guys when I 1st bought my truck last year!I figured if the truck had 100K on it the bugs were all worked out... . Boy was I wrong!Truck died on me going up a steep hill pulling my trailer. . huge tow bill. Got home and got on this site and everyone asked what my fuel pressure was... . well ya' know that is a hard question to answer when I was urged to install one and never did. I installed FASS myself and lucked out with my VP but I think it certainly took some miles off of it. Now,I do everything these guys recommend ... . at any cost! Just my 2 cents as I don't want anybody else to have to learn the hard way... . like I did.

Thanks for the info guys. One buddy ordered what he needed out of genos. The other truck is the one that was acting up lately. I got a needle valve, a grease gun hose, and a gauge for it, so we can rig up a gauge to see whats going on in the mean time. Neither one of them is driving their trucks to work until their gauges come in. Because the trucks aren't here and they live out of town, I haven't got to take a look under the hood yet. They went home last night and looked it over to see where everything is. There is one of those check valves like a valve stem in the top of the supply line banjo. Is that pipe thread where it screws into the banjo? I will be able to see it tommorow when he takes it out and brings it back to work. I'm just asking tonight to see what we need to get for tommorow. We are all here stuck at work and there trucks are down. I'm just trying to gather info and fittings so I can help them get going tommorow night. Thanks.
