Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) New to 4X4, quick question..please respond

Hey!! I have an 04. 5 4x2, but just bought (GOt a great deal on) a 2002 4x4 ST model 24 valve, etc... . I have never owned a 4x4. What gear setting is best to run around in if you do NOT need any kid of 4x4 whatsoever??? When I drove it home from the dealer it was in the 3rd notch down on the shifter (2H). . there was no light on the dash. I put it up one into Neutral, Still no light. FOr grins I put it into the top notch 4L, light came on. . ALso put it onto 4H and the light returned... . SO which is best for everyday driving??? SOrry for the dumb question, but it is my first 4x4... . Roper Oo.

2h is where you want it. you shouldnt run in 4x4 unless you are on loose ground.

to be honest, I am not sure. it disengages the driveline from the trans. I think it is for towing our vehicles. dont know how often you would flat tow a truck like ours. lol. but some transfer cases dont disengage the 4x4 when in neutral. not quite sure how ours work. I have never tried mine when the wheels were off the ground to see if everything disengages.

I once tried to tow a geo tracker on my tow dolly in neutral. but started dragging the rear wheels on the geo. the transfer case was still hooked in 4x4 but not hooked to the trans. doesnt make much sense to me. oh well, hope this helps a little.

The neutral position is for having the vehicle towed. It disengages the driveline from the back of the transmission so that the wheels can spin without spinning the transmission output shaft (this burns up transmissions in a hurry). If you never that the truck towed you'll never need Neutral in the t-case.

Thanks for all the helpful info!!! Like I said, I have had CTD's since 1989 but never had a 4x4... I will remember neutral when being towed!!

Neutral on the Xfer case is used with PTO (power take off) driven implements - truck won't move but have engine power to the transmission to drive the PTO.

you know, I wondered why it looked like a pto access cover on the side of my t-case. thanks for that info.
