I jacked knifed and totaled my 98 12 valve. I just bought a 2002 quad, 4X4, auto, long bed with 40,000 miles on it. I noticed that when you start the truck in mild weather(40 to 50 deg. F), at idel it puts out a white smoke until warm. Is this normal? My 98 12 valve didn't do this.

Check your fuel pressure (12-15 at idle). Also pull the codes. MIGHT be a Injection pump problem :{

Mine doesn't smoke no matter what the temp.

2001. 5 2500 4X4 5-Spd LB QC Black. Catcher ECM, DD Stage-1's, , AFE, Bully Dog 4" pipe, ATS Exhaust Manifold, JAKE Brake w/shifter switch, Geno's Banjo's, 3 Autometer's on the A-Pillar, Gear Vendor's O/D, Firestone Air Bags, Redline Oil throughout.

I have noticed when cold out if you don't let the grid heaters run there course it will white smoke some,you might check your grid heaters and see if there working,and as Supermod56 said it may be the injection pump,going south... .

Mine only smokes when it is below 35-40 degrees. Check and see if the heater grids are working. When you start the truck, look at the alt. gauge, if it is going up and down and the lights in the truck are dimming, then they are working. They should energize any time the outside temp is below 65F.

Get a mechanical fuel pressure, boost, and EGT gauge for your truck. Also, get and keep a replacement lift pump along with 18mm short combo wrench and 13mm deep ratchet, and keep them in your truck at all time. Your lift pump is probably dying.

I am New at this, is the lift pump the same as a transfer pump, the machanical pump the drives off the engine?

IKE

Lift pump = transfer pump. Unlike the 12V, the 24V lift pump is electrically driven and controlled by the ECM (engine control module).

Cycle the key on and off three times leaving it on the third time and look for codes on the odometer window. "Do not start it" Watch out if you see a P0216. SNOKING

white smoke

I see white smoke when it's cold out until the truck warms up. It's always done it since brand new. If it's a problem with my injection pump it would of been dead by now.
