I currently have an '08 2500 and am looking at a '12 3500 dually. It has the Cummins with a manual transmission. Are there any potential problems on the 2012 I should look for? I drove the truck home today to check it out and it rides like a Cadillac compared to the short bed 2500. The truck ahs 80,000 miles on it and appears to be in good shape mechanically. I really like the truck, although I'm not sure the DW approves of a trade.

The pre SCR 4th gens are rough on diesel consumption.

My 2012 got 13 mpg avg. pre deletes, about 15 post. Towing I was lucky to get 11 MPG.

The early 4th gens are known for their pinion seal leaks. I went through 2 in 54K miles.

Thanks for the reply. That fuel mileage is going to be hard to swallow. I get 19-20 in my '08. The pinion seal looks dry, I think it is okay. Maybe I will just keep what I have.

I'll second the fuel mileage issue. My 2012 would average about 20% lower than my previous 04.5 and now my 2015. Other than that though, mine was trouble free for 48k miles. I only traded because mine was part of the tie rod recall/buyback and dealer made me an offer I couldn't refuse on a new one w/ Aisin.

How are you attaining those figures in the '08......unless it's deleted???

Mine was trouble free for 54K - except for the pinion yoke seals. Got close to $34K on a trade for a 2016 CCSB 2500 BigHorn.

I've only seen the 3rd gen 6.7s pull down decent mileage if the are deleted. Or if they are going down hill with a tailwind.
