I am flying out to pick up a 98' 3500 12valve on Wednesday with 150k miles. I spoke with the owner, and he says that he is burning/leaking about 1qt of oil every oil change. (3K) That sounds about right to me, but I wanted to run it by you guys to make sure that wasn't out of the ordinary.

He is pretty sure the truck hasn't had the dowel pin fixed, so I am going to pull the cover, tab the pin, and put a new seal on which should take care of some of the oil leak he has. Not much, but a little bit.

Truck has an NV4500, I need to know how to check/change the grease, and what else to look for on a truck with this many miles. I know these are good for 300-400k miles, so I'm not too worried about the miles.

1 qt of oil every 3k seems a tad high to me, IMHO. I've burned about 2qts in 13k miles, but then again i have less miles than your-new-to-you truck has.

Have the valves been adjusted? How about axle fluids? Transmission fluids? Probably a good idea to do whole fluid / filter replacement when you get the truck. .

Thats my plan is to do a full service when I get home with the truck. Some of the oil is leaking around the front main, so I think when I replace that seal and tab the KDP, that will help some. After that, Diff. transmission. oil and possibly a coolant flush and I feel like it should be good to go. thanks.
