I will agree that there have been a couple times that I have thought about how much easier it would have been going with something newer. But I still keep smiling when I walk outside in the morning and see my truck, and wouldn't have it any other way.

First I would consider your motivation. What is driving your decision? Mine was like yours; I liked the first gen body and the simplicity of it. Also, I drove a brand new one right before I bought mine and enjoyed my truck more, mainly because of it's patina.

Second. Mileage is not like a Geo metro. But then again it is not like a v10 ford. It is big truck that will offer fluctuating mileage returns within a certain range.

Third. Everybody else's experience is not your own. In a forum environment, there is nothing but experience; which is the nectar of life, but it is not yours. Take what you can from here and factor in your variables.

Either way you go, you will not be disappointed. Both generations offer great qualities and will run long after your need diminshes, if properly serviced.

I've been in this position. If you can truly afford it, go with a new truck. But, if you have any plans in the near future that may change your financial situation, then go used. I had a real nice '96 when I graduated from college, then had to let it go to buy my first house. Then I recovered, and bought an '02. Loved that truck, but then had 2 kids. Now I have a first gen.

Bought mine for $8500, and have around $17k in it total. I don't buy used, so I bought new seats, tires, wheels, etc. I'm at work or spending time with the kids, so I don't play mechanic, so I also paid a shop to fix a rear main, KDP, etc, etc. If I had gone with some used parts, and did the work myself, I likely would have less than $13 in the truck. Tough truck though. Hauls more than my previous '02.

I've got a pretty nice 1st gen I would part with for what I paid.....

My wifes silver 93 we are talking about moving back to the city and would only need one truck then... ... .

I drove the newer 01 trucks and drove the 92 I have and They seemed like about the same truck. Granted the 92 was not as refined as the 01 was but for the price it was alot better.

WOW! Again you guys are great! Thanks for all the great advice. I am still undecided on what I would like to do. I know that the Gen 1 is much more cost effective and I could get the reliability and mileage I want with a little teaking. But on the other hand the comfort and refinement of a new truck is sooooo nice :) I think what I might do is look for Gen 1's close to me so I can look and drive one of them to get a feel. I'll keep you guys posted. TDR was the best subscription I ever bought! Thanks again to all of you.

Don't forget, WE are a much better class of people on the First Gen Forum!! Owning a 2nd or 3rd Gen doesn't make you a bad person, at least it's a Cummins.

Scientific studies have proven that First Gen owners have larger brains, attract better women and don't need all those hormonal additives that are advertised these days. Of course, in all honesty, we do have smaller... ... . wallets!!

I swear that the above statements are true, because the voices in my head told me so!

Yup, the reason lots of us are so young- we cant afford the newer stuff. Then we join this nut house, and decide the 1st Gens aint so bad after all.

They told you that, too, huh?:-laf :-laf Interesting.....

I'll agree that the 1st Gen forum is a nicer, easier goin bunch than the other generations; more willing to hlep out and not so offensive/ offendable.

Mike I know this is not the for sale forum but the truck in my sig could soon be for sale. I bought it two years ago and at about the same time bought a 23 foot Prowler, I've used the Prowler one time. Most trips my son and I just sleep in a tent or the back of the truck. Wife and daughter just aren't much for camping I guess. These rigs are dying from non use... the truck is mostly a third vehicle which really intimidates my wife enough that she won't drive it, and I've got a daughter with eyes for my Neon ACR which would leave me with the truck to use as a daily ride which is not how I want to use it, so... .

I feel this truck is worth every penny of $9,000 and I think it' has 108,000 miles on it now. It's not advertised anywhere, (unlike the trailer) my folks are moving to Phoenix in the fall and I might get to haul a load or two if I still have it then so I'm in no hurry I guess.

Like everything else I've ever sold I'll probably kick myself should I end up selling, but it's not going to be a fit in my situation. (unless I buy a 4th car) PM me if you're interested.

Jeff
