Had my 06 2500 w 6 speed for about two weeks now, seems they have quieted the diesels down even more (since my 03, same configuration) Exhaust doesn't even smell like diesel anymore, it reminds me of a 6. 5 I had years ago, more like car exhaust. The new man trans shifts well but the gearing is a real disappointment, the new truck with 3. 73 gears seems to run about the same rpms as the 03 with 4. 10s. The reverse gear placement nearly got me squashed the first nite, as I tried to get out of the way of a semi and didn't realize reverse was moved, and was about impossible to find in the dark.
My question is what is this motor supposed to sound like?
Starting out cold upto about 175 deg. it runs smooth and strong, after 175 it starts sounding like that old 6. 5 and a 6. 2 did. It sounds like a spark knock in a gas motor. Seems worst from 1500 to 1800 rpms load or no load, I had my trailer on for the first time today and it was worse
still. Doesn't loose any power just sounds bad. Also does it when just cruising. I never noticed this in the last truck.
I have an M715 with one of these motors with a straight exhaust and no sound deadening, I'd rather listen to that all day long than hear that new motor knocking around. Just dropped it off at the dealer for some more analysis, but they don't have a real Cumnz guy, am tempted to run it up to Cummins of Grand Rapids. Any helpful thoughts appreciated.
