My wife and I took the plunge today and got a 2018 Laramie 3500 DRW with the Aisin and 3.73 gearing. We kept the 06 Mega. Nice truck.

And now the learning curve begins! I already figured out the dealership has the tires beyond 80# on all 6. How hard is it to get the right pressure in the tires? Heck, there's a readout on the dash that tells you!

Very nice! I just ordered a new 4500, which is also my first ever automatic equipped truck. I got the highest gear ratio offered, which is 4.10. I will be keeping my 1996 and 3003 also, at least for a while.

OK, I give up. What's with the 3.73's? I haven't been keeping up real closely with the 4th Generation or the Aisin. Too late to change my mind now though.

Actually, there is absolutely nothing wrong with them.....it's part of an ongoing debate.

12V98 will tell you that 3.42 are good up to XXXXX lbs (forgive me, you'd think I'd have his arbitrary weights memorized as many times as I've heard them, but I don't). However, go above that, and you skip right over 3.73's to 4.10's because he's feels that 3.73's are useless and for some reason will just not get the job done. Apparently, there are only a couple select RPM's that a Cummins will work in, and the rest simply do not work.

But for the rest of us, when it comes to moving weight:
3.42 Good
3.73 Better
4.10 Best

I figure it's rated at 25k-ish so even if I get a bigger trailer I should be good. Can't ever see towing 30k+ since it's not a work truck. 3.42's are a "mere" 20 or 21k. It's also my DD so a wee more mileage empty would be nice.

As a long time owner of 3:73s, I can honestly say there are days I wish I had the 4:10s but not enough to want to change trucks. My new LQ horse trailer fully loaded is at 26k on the interstate at 70ish we down shift out of 6th gear with the cruise on pulling hills. Nothing wrong with that just the transmission doing its thing. I just hate the downshift. I have pulled same trailer with 4:10s and this never happens. I have also pulled the same trailer with 3:42s and with 6th locked out it doesn't do it either, but it sure does groan a lot starting from a stop with the 3:42s. I daily drive my truck and the 3:73s do awful good empty on fuel mileage. 19mpg running 85mph for 565miles hand calculated for a truck this size I am tickled with that. Fuel mileage loaded was within .5mpg of all three rear ends.
