New toy.

I just bought a 12x36 Craftsman/Atlas lathe. Model # 101. 07403

It is in excellent condition. The table dont match, but it's good & sturdy, could use a coat of paint. The lathe itself looks like it stepped out of a 60+ year old catalog. I dont even think the bearings are broken in yet. NO rust on it anywhere!! I believe the belts are even original!

It didnt come with much tooling, but I have the paperwork. It's dated 1947.

I havent used a lathe in 30 years.

The price was right.

I'm trying to find a steady rest and I need to know what morse taper is the tailstock. I need a live center to put on there.

Anyone else have a lathe?

I've got a small South Bend that was my grandfathers, it's old enough that is doesn't have a quick change gearbox, but has a stack of gears and you have to refer to the charts for cutting threads or feedspeeds. I recently got a Powermatic belt/disk sander off e-bay it has the 6-48 belt and about a 12" disk, I got it for $61 dollars and the guy I got it from, his father lived in my town so he delivered it to my house for me. I've seen the same sanders go for over $750 used and over $1500 new. This one is probably 35 years old and is in really good shape.

I dont think it was even broken in yet. It's pretty much like new now. Not a spec of rust anywhere. Amazing!

Thanks! How do you like it? I actually bought it to thread some demilled barrels, but they dont fit through the headstock, so plan II.

The live center, and the steadyrest. Know anyone selling these parts?

I pulled off the tailstock last night to get a good look at that end. The ways look like new under it, and under the tailstock also looks like it's been cast last week.



I got to update the "usually at work". I havent worked since 04.

I would expect normal tooling to fit this lathe. Try Enco for cheap stuff.

E-bay is another good source. During High school I went to a Vo-Tec school for machine trades, our teacher brought in a whole bunch of stuff from a deceased machinist to sell for the guys wife, I thought I got a great deal on a complete set of collets and all the hardware for the South bend I now own when I paid $100. I gave the stuff to my grandfather for Christmas, I guess that's probably why I ended up with it now.

The Atlas lathe in nice because of things like the milling stand for milling small parts but like you say the spindle is small. I picked up a Southbend collet lathe to get a larger spindle bore, it hard to find one machine to do everything. I'll keep an eye out for a steady rest, do you want a milling stand or turret attachment. Also J&L Industrial Supply is a good catalog to get for tooling and accessories.

Wrong forum but what cal barrels are you threading?

You got my curiosity up about accessories for your lathe so I looked on e-Bay, steady rest for $50, milling stand $200, drawbar $12, all the goodies you'll need and a face plate with dogs for turning your barrels between centers. You got a smoking deal at $200 now add $800 worth of tooling and you'll be set.

Back to barrels, turning them between centers is more accurate than using a chuck and steady rest and works for all calibers and just make a pilot for support to cut the crown.

Yea, I've been on ebay too. I think I need a steady rest, and live center to thread these barrels. The barrel wont fit through the headstock, but it'll chuck up nicley at the chamber end.

Not sure if this is the proper approach though, it's been a while since I used a lathe. Highschool.

I have a couple M14 barrels that were demilled by cutting off the barrels at the flash hider. I can make them 18" and thread them for a 9/16x24 flash hider as long as I use the smith ent gas block front sight system.

They gauge "0" on both muzzle and throat, so it's worth the effort.
