Does anyone know how much a new auto transmission is from DC for a 98. 5 3500 2wd? Mine has 95k on it. I have made some modifications and don't feel like the thing is going to hold up as I tow a 38' gooseneck weighing around 12k#. Talked to Bill K. @ DTT and he advised me NOT to do the TC/VB with this much mileage. My transmission man wants an estimated 1200-1500 to remove/rebuild/re-install mine with me providing the TC and VB. For some reason, I have never trusted locally rebuilt trannys and thought this might be a safer way to go - new factory transmission w/ DTT VB/TC. The other option would be to get the whole thing from Bill except for the shipping charges/hassel. Anyone got any ideas or suggestions?

Bent6, I am an installer and builder approved by Bill, I am in Tx. but closer than Canada, I can rebuild your truck in a weekend. We would just need to set an appointment. E-mail me for more info. You can call Bill for recommendation.

Unlike the 1st generation trucks there are no major updates. You wont go wrong dealing with James, I spent 3 days with him in Texas at his facilities. He is a top notch builder and he actually cares about the customer and his work.

The dodge ram transmission is not a complicated transmission to build, its the set up and the clearances that require the expertise to make this transmission live and James is well equiped to do this type of tweaking.

When considering the above please keep in mind i do not make personal recommendations lightly.

Bent6,
I've been in your shoes before. I had to have my transmission rebuilt recently. I don't trust anyone locally either, but I didn't have the tools to rebuild my overdrive section properly. I took just that part to the transmission shop and he put the pressure plate on the wrong side of the clutch pack!!! Rookie mistake.

I have met both inarush76 and Bill, and they are both great transmission builders. There are a lot of little tricks that they have discovered with their many years of experience that really help these trannies live behind Cummins diesel power.

My friendly local Dodge dealer wants $2999 for a new transmission. If you then add the price of Bill's parts, you are WAY over the price of Bill's transmission. I've heard of new trannies going for $1900 or so (never found one), but then you get stuck with $300 shipping cost.

Tough decision,

Chris
