Big Daddy T,
That I don't know for sure, ain't no expert, but I would guess that the 48re can handle the most in "stock" form. And I only say that because of the torque being created by the CTD. The V8's definately are making HP and torque, but don't really see any output till they are moving, around 2000 rpm. We are making torque right from the git go, down low, where it matters, as everything builds. That alone tells me the 48re is the strongest of the bunch. Having driven the Fords, it felt like power was very slow to build till around that 2000 rpm range, almost feels like the transmission slips purposely (defueling?), and that is unloaded. Where my CTD will grunt right from the start, ecspecially with a 10,000 lb load on the back. But, I have never towed with a V-8.
Now, the Dmax guys complain about the defueling going on at take off (1st or 2nd) and fith gear. The 6. 0 guys have virtually said the same thing, but mainly at take off.
Take a look back over at thedieselstop.com, look in the Upgrades and Aftermarket-6. 0 thread. There are quite a few blown T-shift trannies there, the main culprit seems to be a little more HP & Torque. There are also a bunch of stock ones in the main 6. 0 thread, that have gone bad from general use. I would say that the 48re is definatly the strongest of the bunch, with the most simplest of designs. Kinda like the Cummins, fewer moving parts, and less electronics.
Out of the 4 6. 0 owners I know, 2 have had trannies replaced. These are older guys that don't abuse their equipment, but do use them on the job. The 6 3rd gens I know of have had no problems, other then Ron with the 6spd and some shifting problems. That says allot to me.
