New transmission

I would like to know if anyone has bought a new transmission from Chysler, for their 1st generation Dodge. This is a new trans, with updated features. I would like to know how much you paid, where you got it, did you have to do a lot of shopping around to get that price.

yes idid nv4500 late 99 5 spd
get shifter knob , blue chip has bell hse
price range 1900 real good 2300 high end
that was with the knob shifter re use
old boot did not price 6 spd
5 spd at low end will graul some from torke
but other wise quiet
replace clutch w. / mod bell hse
all will bolt in , cut new 5 inch floor hole
5 inch closer to seat

Anyone know for sure what the "improvements" are? And are these the older 3-speed 727 auto, or the later OD unit?

These are overdrive transmissions with none lock-up torque converters. Some of the improvments are a more heavy duty overdrive unit and improved oil passages. Bill Kondolay
is a good source for information on these.

I Bought a 47rh trans (replacing the 727 in my early 91)with lock-up from chrysler for 1800. 00$. The trans included all the latest revisions that mopar has added through the years, better clutch materials stronger planetaries, ect... Contact Bill Kondolay about an electronic control box to handle the lockup and od. As to details, the kickdown and shift linkage, and the speedo sender fit perfectly. I have just got the truck back from the body shop so I can not comment on the flexplate, starter, or engine adapter. I will post my findings as soon as possible. #ad

I put an early 518 in my 89 and am disappointed. The oil passages do NOT adequately lubricate the tailshaft bearing. It's gone through two in two years. The overdrive is not noticeable unless the throttle is slack; torque convertor slippage makes up for the gearing increase. I believe a lockup 727 would be better. Ideal setup would be a lockup 727 with a Gear Vendors OD!

Murfman - lessee if I got this right (not familiar with the 47rh transmission) - the newer, improved auto HAS the OD built-in, has beefier clutches and planetaries and a lockup converter will work with it, possibly requiring a "magic box" to facilitate the swap? ALL for around 2 grand? #ad

Sounds GREAT to me, I'm tempted to swap mine out, even tho' it's still working perfectly!

Someone correct me if I'm assuming incorrectly any of the above, keeping in mind *I* currently have the plain 3-speed 727 in an EARLY '91...

OTHERWISE, JSimpsons comments on a lockup converter on a beefed-up 727 and aftermarket OD are do-able, and I already have the US Gear OD...

Gary, you forgot to add the converter price, I bought mine from D. T. T. on a group purchase for 850. 00. I believe tho O. D. with out a lockup converter is not efficient enough, too much slipping IMHO. Also dont forget modifying the driveshaft and transmount #ad

WOW - $850 for a converter, and on "special" at that... . It does run the total up considerably... I need to get more specifics on the best bang for the buck involving getting a stronger transmission (either 727 with my US Gear OD, or a later CC auto with built-in OD), or working with the 727/OD I already have, and either the lockup converter commented on above, or at LEAST a "tighter" converter for the 727 to reduce slippage...

transmission comes ether way: with lock up and none lock up converters. What was the total cost of this change over on your truck

The total cost came out to appox~3400. 00$, but it is not as bad as it sounds. I bought a wrecked errly 91 Cummins equipped d250 for 1500. 00$ and I am swapping the engine into my 1983 crewcab. I wanted (needed) the OD to work with my 3. 54 gears as I could not use the single rear wheel axle (which I sold for 500. 00$ helping to ease the cost of the trans parts) and was looking at replacing the 727 converter @~4-500. 00$ and adding a gear vendors or U. S. Gear OD at appox ~2200. 00 and then rebuilding the 727 @ 4-500. 00 this added up to the same as a new mopar trans with a Bill Kondolay converter and modified Valve body. The cost of the driveshaft is nil because I needed to change it anyway and now I have the benefit of a lockup converter and all the trans updates.

I got my 47rh installed in my 89 4x4 a little over a month ago. Needed new engine to trans adapter due to lockup converter sticking out of bellhousing 1" further than on original 727. New adapter plate required use of 94 and up starter due to change in bolt pattern. Flex plate for 94 and up is different part number than 89 but there is no visible difference-I reinstalled the 89 plate and hung the 94 one one the wall to have for a spare. Fuel lines need to be relocated slightly to clear starter. Dipstick tube(engine) will be reformed slightly when starter is installed for first time. Draft tube needs to be run to outside of starter. Pivot point on frame for shift linkage needs to be extended back 1" to line up with bracket on trans. After running my old girl with this trans for 4-5 weeks now I am in agreement with jsimpson, the t/converter in this trans is extremely sloppy compared to the one in the 727, would recommend upgrading to one of DTT's units if you have the cash. Hope this info helps those of you considering this upgrade.
